Good COPO trivia question
Does anyone know when the COPO first showed up in competition at an NHRA event?
|
If your talking Camaro's I believe it was ZL1 #1 at Phoenix in February 69? The Gibb L78/400 Nova's were much earlier of course, summer of 68 I think?
|
Yes, 427 Camaros.
|
Not sure about the iron 427's but there were several that went straight to the track when new. There are many members here that know much more about them than me. I wasn't even born yet :(

I thought #2 or #3 was also there?? |
I don’t believe that was an NHRA sanctioned event. Possibly American Hot Rod Association race.

Yes it was the ahra winternatinals. I traveled down to it with Herb Fox and Carl Ward and Ray Sullins to see the zl1 run. I believe that was the time Gas Rhonda was injured in a new mustang and Dick Landy was there with a special hemi Dodge running experimental heads. Boy those were the good o days.

The answer to this question and just about any other question you may have about COPO cars is answered in Matt Avery's new book "COPO" on sale now at book stores and Amazon. Matt will also be at MCACN promoting, selling and signing copies of his new book. There's a world of info on all of the COPO cars in the book and some of our own like Stefano Bimby, Brian Henderson, and others were major contributors making this book one of the most informative and accurate books on COPO's I've ever read. Highly recommended and for 40 bucks your muscle car library needs this book added to your collection!

Only $34.16 on Amazon...
Just bought a copy. Dan |
Were the ZL1's allowed to race the first event when they showed up with carbs that were not on the homologation paperwork?
