License plate fuel filler access
 

Maybe a dumb question but I'll ask anyway.

On A-bodies like my '67 GTO with the fold-down rear license plate bracket, is there supposed to be a pull-tab of sorts to help pull the plate down and out of the way?

I don't think so. There are small rubber bumpers on the back of the door to gap it from the bumper. The bumper in that area is also cut out to give your fingers a place to go.

I was thinking in the 70’s some of the Malibu’s had like a hook on the license plate door..

I would guess that a GTO would be like this '67 Chevelle. Fingers over the top and held open by the gas pump nozzle.

Not sure where to get them (no luck with a quick google search for me) but the picture (courtesy of the internet) shows a plastic pull handle that is integrated into the plastic license plate nut insert. I'll try and get a better picture as we have something similar on our Turbo Regal. Don't remember if it was a factory thing or something we added.

I think a lot of the '80s G body cars had those, I junked a few with them and my Monte Carlo has one.

Thanks a lot guys. I think my parents' '79 Fleetwood had one of these too. Will have to look around in the local junkyards for something.

The 72 Formula I'm restoring for a customer has one. Appears to be original, and has a metal pull tab on the driver side that is riveted on.

My 72 Chevelle however doesn't have one, and neither does my 70 Formula.

I've rarely seen them on muscle cars. The Formula I'm restoring is the first one I've seen in several years.

There was a GM accessory stainless steel license plate frame that was bent at the top as a formed handle at the for fingertip pull of the license plate and bracket. It attached to the actual license plate by 4 springsteel brackets.My Dad purchased one for his brand new1969 Buick Electra 225 4 dr. from Lake Buick in Cleveland, OH in Feb. of 1970. It was a 1969 end of model year holdover the dealership had to get rid of. I was with Dad when he bought it off the showroom floor for $4200.00, what a deal! I think I still have it somewhere as he traded in the car in 1973 for a 1973 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham. Don.

I remember some cars having these when I was pumping gas in the 70's and 80's, never paid attention to the brand of cars though. I don't recall these on any of the GM A or F bodies though.
