thanks Darrell. Got it. There used to be a "create pm" or something to that effect when you went to "your notifications" page. can't find that anymore.

Either under User CP or when you are looking at your inbox to the left you will see "Your Control Panel" look down towards the bottom of the list and you will see under "Private Messages" a tab for "Send New Message".
