1969 Z/28 Steering Wheel Question...

I have a friend who is getting some restoration work done on his 1969 Z/28 X77. He's had it certified by Jerry M years back and everything is a numbers matching car. Jerry M had told him to replace the three spoke wheel (N34) with the correct standard steering wheel...now his question to me was---"If you had the X77 package did it solely come with the standard steering wheel OR could you order the optional N34 wheel if you had the X77 package at the time of purchase??? He hasn't found any build sheet with the car. Haven't been able to find any source on CRG either. Would anyone know the correct answer to this question? Or could either steering wheel be correct for that matter. Thanks in advance.

Sal

If Jerry told him to do that, nothing else matters...

When you look up the N34 wheel in the order sheet it says nothing about what cars could or couldn't order that wheel. Which N34 wheel does he have? The walnut wheel was only used for the first couple of months. The rose wood replaced it after that. Could that be the issue?....Joe

Maybe the comfort grip steering wheel he is talking about?? There doesn't seem to be enough proof that it could be ordered. Someone on here had a 69 Camaro that had it ordered on a original invoice. I believe Charley owned the car at the time. You see a lot of Camaros today with this type steering wheel.

Re: 1969 Z/28 Steering Wheel Question...

The NK1 Cushioned-Rim steering wheel became an option as of April, 1969. If the car was built prior to late April it couldn't be OE. It is very rare, few documented NK1 cars exist. The dealer info on NK1 states the wheel was black, 15" diameter. There were similar wheels used by GM on other lines that were color-keyed.

X33 and X77 did not affect the steering wheel.

That's not the N34 wheel. The N34 wheel was simulated wood, either walnut or rosewood, depending on when it was built. Both very pricey today...Joe
