837 Alt Questions

I tried the search function going back 12 years, but only got 4 pages all from 2016 !!!!!!

Anyway, one of my two "837" Delco/Remy alternators does NOT have the "Delco-Remy USA" logo
next to threaded hole where (drive belt adjustment) bolt threads in.

Given that this logo area is covered by the black adjustment bracket, how else do you
recognize aftermarket alternators..
THIS non Delco Alt has been stamped like original (Delco).......but I didnt
recognize this fact (until a friend advised)
Any experienced advice on this re-stamp recognition

Other than Ken Bruno, who are the recognized experts on this subject

Re: 837 Alt Questions

My searches result the same as what you describe.
Re-stamps are more common then originals. Before a purchase one should post the stamping for the pro's to critique.
Its best not to make public the info on how to spot a fake.

On my alledged 837 restamp..........can "they" marry a Delco Remy rear half case with a Non Delco (aftermarket) front half case and stamp the bogus numbers where there were NONE before.

Do some/or all of the aftermarket "Delco" Style alternators have NO stampings on front half case ????
leaving a clean area for forgeries to be done ????

Re: 837 Alt Questions

GM did sell over the counter 37A replacements that were not stamped. I have one such case in blank form and they are the ideal ones for the re-stampers to find as they don't have to mill the case to remove the old original stamps. Looking at many of the restamps, you can see a ledge behind the mounting boss after they have milled the front case. There's a guy in Indiana who has been stamping them on an original rolling stamp he's acquired from the old AC Delco plant who been turning out some cases that are very close to looking original and it's getting hard to tell some apart.

This is my original AC Delco unstamped case. Ken Bruno told me these old cases have Julian dates on the inside but I haven't taken this one apart yet to see what the date is. I bought this one off eBay to keep it out of the hands of the restampers. That and I wanted the date coded diodes out of it.

Re: 837 Alt Questions

Does your above "over the counter" NO STAMP have the Deloc Remy made in USA
logo embossed on FRONT side, next to the threaded upper hole (shown in your top pic)

I have Delco Remy rear half case, with a front case having NO logo next to
threaded hole (front side)

Curious if there are NON Delco Cases that were made "same as" Delco, so Front and
Rear's could be interchanged ????

Also I have an 834 Restored, where the diodes look copper......were they zinc plated
over copper. Are the rubber stamps codes on restored units, just a gimic or do they
mean anything ????

Yes and Yes.

Re: 837 Alt Questions

Thanks Lynn and Norcam, When you see new shiny diodes that have been rubber stamped with
???? is that normal for legit real original restorations or not......
OR would/could original diodes be shined up and restamped with rubber/ink....

I have one 834 restoration where the diodes show copper........apparently the
zinc plating was glass beaded away.........what's up with that ?????

Re: 837 Alt Questions

The better restorations have the diodes redone and they are silver with the positive/negative diodes stamped in red and black. It's a date code and they should be relative to the Julian date cast on the inside of the case, and made just prior to the case stamping. Just like an engine stamp versus casting date. The outer case should also have the AC Delco embossed logo. The blank one you asked about has the logo as well (see top right first image)

restored date codes

You asked if the cases can be interchanged and the answer is yes. Later style half cases will interchanged but they are easily spotted as the castings have subtle external differences and can be easily spotted. I'm not sure about the gold colored diodes and can only say maybe they were different in 2nd gens, but I'd reason to bet they were silver too Chuck. Those might have been aftermarket.
