1969 Nova factory leaf spring add-on for low HP

I was just sent over three pictures of the leaf springs to a super low milage 1969 Nova 6-cylinder with a powerglide. It looks like the factory attached a block of metal on each mono leaf spring for some reason. I have never seen this before any idea why?

Chassis engineers found that there would be vibrations under certain conditions, and that weight lessened those vibrations at a lesser cost than a real engineering fix.

I had the same type of weights om my 69 307 Nova.
