#3279 ,302 crankshaft

Question for all the Z28 experts, was the #3279 crank used in 68 Z28 302 engines, and the early 69Z28 engine production, or was it an over the parts counter crank.
Several crankshaft books show it as 68-69 ,302 ,3 inch stroke.

Thanks

3279 is 1968z28, it is a large journal crankshaft. As far as 1969 early use I believe it would be possible if that's what was there to be used. Back then there was not much quality control more like quantity. Nothing surprises me when you here different stories about what they did on the assembly lines. Just my opinion.

Re: #3279 ,302 crankshaft

I agree on parts being mis matched or using what was available, a couple good friends worked at the Corvette factory in St. Louis many years have told stories about things that happened every day.
I recently tore down an early built 1969,302 engine, everything was correct except it has the 3279 large journal crank,so i was curious if this crank carried over to some early built 69 engines, anything is possible from back then.

For sure 3279 is a born with crank for a 68z.I seen three virgin 68z engines with the 3279 crank.Never seen one in a 69z.

I asked Jerry M., he said it ,is, possible for a Oct.-5 stamped 302 engine to have a left over 3279 Crank.

Does not matter what number it is. It's a factory large journal 302 crank. Put it in and rev it up!

I think the 3279 is more valuable simply because it was used in the 68 which was lower production. The 1178 was the 69 Z crank and was also the service crank. I would think you could trade the 3279 for an 1178 pretty easily if you are stuck on wanting an 1178.

It is installed in my newly rebuilt 302 and almost ready to fire up.

Unless Mike has a "see thru" oil pan and a jack with him at every car show that would not be necessary. HA!

Sam, good idea on the see thru oil pan, but it has the original 69Z pan & windage tray, floating rods,
186 heads, 472 intake, DZ carb, manifolds, smog, pulleys, fan, alt., etc
