Finders fees.
 

Just wondering what you guys think about finders fees.If you were looking for a special car that you used to own and I said I think I know where it is,do you think I'm out of line to expect a couple of hundred bucks if you ended up buying the car?I wouldn't expect anything until the person actually bought the car.I'm talking about a rare collectable that would be worth 40K+.Call me crazy but there has been a number of times that someone has put me onto a car that I bought and I threw the guy $200 for helping me out.

Not at all, your service is worth that all day long for any car, <span style="font-weight: bold">especially</span> if the car is not even advertised.

I don't charge anything and I've connected around a dozen people with their old cars. In fact, I've created a facebook page that allows users to post the cars they're searching for on the site. I know others use themselves as a middleman for leverage and i'm not interested in that at all. I just get out of the way and hand over whatever information that's been uncovered.

The site has been very well received and I think that's because it's free.

I think a persons time has a value. If your making phone calls, chasing leads and looking at cars, that is fair for finders fee. Just be up front with them what you can do and how much. They can decide to use your help or go on there own.

I think a finders fee in some circumstances is appropriate. The lines are blurry but if you use your gut feeling you won't go wrong:-)

I too used to do it quite frequently for people at no charge and just as a favor to the hobby. However after several of these people bought and sold the cars I helped them find and at a huge profit with little more than a thank you and the fact that it was taking me out of the shop where I (was) getting paid I started to charge a fee. Most people expect it but seldom offer it so you are not out of line asking for it. I have put some fantastic cars in the hands of collectors and feel I earned the fee for doing so. As was said, time is money and I should be able to earn money the same as anyone else. Especially if you are an expert in your field, you should get paid for that expertise.

Same goes for inspection fees. I almost 100% of the time save people more than the fee cost them. In many cases I have saved them well over $100k from buying a fake car. Because of that I no longer feel guilty about charging a fee.
