Sun Tach ST-601

Does anyone know what year the Sun ST-601 was originally released? (I tried google first with no luck.) It is the 10K rpm half sweep style tach.

From what I can find on line this model tach does not use a separate sending unit like the earlier tachs. But the car I am working on had the ST-601 tach (mounted in an earlier style cup), and a separate sending unit, all in one box in the trunk.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks - Jeff

It seemed like 1968 was when SUN transitioned from the senders to the stand alone tachs.

Sun had transistorized tachs long before 1968. The ST-601 did come out in 67 or 68 I believe. It does not require the EB transmitter.

I'm pretty sure the first year for it is 1966.

Re: Sun Tach ST-601

Thanks guys. The car is a 67 Chevelle, delivered in Dec. of 66.

There are two holes in the front inner fender that match the sending unit, but the marks on the steering column match the bracket on this ST-601. I guess they put an older tach in the car first, then swapped it out for the ST-601 but hung onto the sender.

Thanks - Jeff

Jeff,
I checked my old Honest Charley catalogs. The ST-601 is listed in his '67 catalog and it mentions it's a new line. It's not in the 65 1/2 catalog. Oddly though, the 65 1/2 catalog had an all electronic one listed, model RE with a 90deg sweep. Higher model numbers did not necessarily mean they were all electronic though. The first ST-700 series still required a sender. I'm pretty sure the first all electronic 700 series was '68 and it had a white needle. By '69 they all had a red needle. (I have both and they're dated)

Hope this helps.
Verne
