Plastic gauge face scratch removal

The plastic dash board gauge lens on my 66 Chevelle is scratched and dirty. Is it possible to polish out the scratches as a "Do It Yourself" operation? Or is this better left to a professional?

If you do it at home are there any suggestions? If it is better left to a professional any suggestions as to who?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I believe Eastwood sells a plastic polishing kit for the lens, but usually buy a new one. They're well made and cheap, but you do have to have the dash apart.

I've had really good results with 3M's Pink Fill in Glaze and have also used Wenol metal polish. Start in a small corner first, as a precaution, but I'd swear by both. Bill is correct, I'd pull the cluster so you can do both sides of the lens. You'd be surprised how cloudy the inside gets.

Stay away from car wax. It's a quick fix and won't hold up over time.

I use NOVUS on everything plastic.

Fast forward to the 5:10 mark for the demonstration.

Agreed, this stuff works excellent. Easy to find at a local motorcycle dealer.

I have used 2000 grit sand paper under the faucet and removed some pretty deep scratches from plastic faces, if you end up having to do this you will have to go to a compound then to polish and then plastic polish. Same technique as removing the scratches and oxidation from Head lamps however the gauge plastic is softer.

I used a pinball playfield and plastic cleaner, designed to clean plastic parts and the surface area of a pinball machine, it also works well on plastic lenses on the cars.
