1974 Super Duty Trans Am

Hi all,
I just joined the forum today! My current project is a 74 SDTA. I found this on ebay over the winter and had been looking for a second generation project. It is reasonably original except for the intake and exhaust manifolds and carb. A bit over 20k miles and almost no rust that I can find other than a little surface. Floors and truck are solid! The car spent the first part of its life on the drag strip in Michigan. I like the history but worry about the nitrous oxide system that was installed. I plan a full rotisserie restoration at CW Restorations in Mason Ohio. Winston is a Pontiac specialist and just finished another 74 SD that is spectacular! I'm hoping for just a little better. We've made very little progress so far on the car. Both of us have been overloaded with projects. I did manage to get front sheet metal pulled but still haven't found time to get the engine out and find out status of the block. Here are a few pics. I hope this summer to find time to work on this one. Maybe after the POCI show this July. -Jim

Old days. I supervised one of the production lines that made this type of condenser at the Harrison Div. as a GM Institute engineering student. This one was made about 10 years before I worked that line.

Nice project! I see you have the assembly (or in this case, disassembly) manual sitting on the firewall.

Looks like its an a/c and rear electric defroster car since it has the 80 amp alternator and the "squeeler" idler pulley set up.

That carb and intake are some obscenely expensive parts. The exhaust manifolds can be found. Does it have headers on it now? I might be interested in them if you are not going to use them.

Start posting those photos.

Welcome to the site. They used to repo those exhaust manifolds due to the orig. ones cracking.

Welcome to the site. There's a few of us GMI grads who hang out here. It sounds like you went through just before me. I was B section '87-92. Good luck with your project-may it ONLY be twice as expensive and take twice as long as you'd hoped......

Hey, a GMI guy! I was B section 80-85. Which division sponsored you?

I hope you're right about only doubling the budget. I'm already sure that the timeline's been doubled.

You are definitely an optimist!

I can't believe it has been 1 1/2 years since I posted last. I've had an insanely busy time at work. At least CW Restorations kept at it with very little help from me, except covering the payments of course. Only thing left is to place the bird on the hood. The first show will be at the Cavalcade of Customs in Cincinnati in January.

The block was good after sitting for years!
