Space Saver Tire Option - early 69 camaro
 

Is there any ref material that can educate me on this option, size, rim codes, canister type, mounting etc.

According to Super Chevy Mag this was a rare option in 1969. At a cost of only $19 back then. Only 2,228 Camaros out of 243,085 Camaros produced that year had this RPO N65 option. Look on page 407 of your 1969 Camaro Factory Assembly Instruction Manual. It was basically a standard sized rim with E78x14 blackwall. It was also available in a E78x14 whitewall---this one was just $15. This option included a GM inflator canister of compressed air with a proper hold-down (retainer)for mounting inside your trunk.

To the best of my knowledge there were two different sizes. A 735X14 for the standard wheel cars and a 775X14 for the larger tire cars (SS / Z28). I believe the letter designation (E78) came later in 1969. Also the assembly manual (option N65) shows two different canisters although I have only seen the short and fat one like the picture above.

N65 was n/a with 15&quot; wheels. No space-saver spare with Z/28 or COPO 9737.

interesting pics....must have been a preproduction car - notice the style trim on the fender well and not on the headlamp, and the stripe goes way down the front.

Anyhow - what is believe to be the correct color of the rim? The pic seems to indicate this one is beige???

Gray. I had one and threw it out. Not sure what model it was from and don't remember where I got it.

I THINK I still have the tire, but not sure of the size. Not sure why I took it off the rim and pitched the rim.

You are welcome to the tire if you want it Eddie. If I do still have it, it is in great condition. Just need to go out and check the shed.

The third owner of my 70 Nova still has all the trunk stuff from the car. He said it came with one of those space-saver spares. Had the inflator can and all, but I can never quite hook up with the guy to get the stuff back....

Lynn, the gray color you mentioned for the rim......was it the same gray as the jack and jack base or different shade?

The base of the jack sounds about right.

It definitely was not for a Camaro though. Just found the tire. It is a G78-15. Way too tall for a Camaro. Maybe full size Buick or even Cad. I have no idea. When i dismounted it in the late 70's, I am pretty sure it was because the bolt pattern did not match my Camaro, but I believe it was a GM. I would have been working at a Buick dealer at the time.

But as for the color of the wheel, definitely a semi gloss (more gloss than flat) gray about the same color as a jack base. IIRC, it also had a yellow sticker with black lettering with some instructions.

The space saver spare was not available on any of the 15 inch wheel 69 Camaro (i.e. Z or Copo with sports car conversion).

I plan to list the tire for free (plus actual shipping) on the PIFC forum.
