12 Bolt Posi Rear End Date Code
I have a 1969 camaro built October 3rd week of 1968 and wanted to know what is the correct timeframe I would need for my car? I know their is a assembly date on the rear end but also a date code stamped on the axle tube. What timeframe would be correct for my car?

Not sure, but it could be as close as a few days. My 69 05A Norwood has a stamped date on the axle of "0501" and the Vin# is 3224xx. By looking at your vin# you can get an idea as to how far into "03E" your car was built. So don't rule out close if you find something. Mike |
Re: 12 Bolt Posi Rear End Date Code
Generally speaking:
Pumpkin casting date - 3-4 weeks before the car was built Axle tube stamping dated 1-3 weeks before the car was built. I know of a 10B car and its rear is dated 9/30, 10D car is dated 10/22. My 11A car is dated 10/16 on the tube and 10/8 on the pumpkin. Earlier 12 bolt rears seem to be harder to find. |

Thankyou for your help. I would like to find a BT, BU or BV coded rear end in that timeframe. Any help would be appreciated.

There is a BV rear in Pennsylvania, but the guy doesn't seem to want to post the casting date or assembly date. Not sure why. Posted on team camaro: http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=211965 |
Re: 12 Bolt Posi Rear End Date Code
If '3rd week' is the body tag date that isn't when the car was built-it's when Fisher Body produced the tag. The final assembly of the car was 3-4 days later, maybe the 4th week, and may have spanned a weekend. Due to the distance, the LA plant carried more inventory so component dates tend to be a bit earlier than Norwood.
My small db has a 10C NOR SS with an Oct 15 axle. |
Re: 12 Bolt Posi Rear End Date Code
Does anybody know anything about warranty replacment rear ends? I found one a guy has out of his 1969 Z28 that was a BU 3:73 gear. Would this be just as good as finding the original dated one for my car?

Re: 12 Bolt Posi Rear End Date Code
sort of ...
nothing will beat the correct ORIGINAL born with parts, but service replacement parts I guess is a close 3rd (2nd would be date and code correct but NOT the "born with" part), at least IMHO ... Ideally <span style="font-weight: bold">IF</span> you use a service replacement part there <span style="font-style: italic">should</span> be a paper trail (real, not made up) that shows when it was done. And along that line, service replacement dates would typically NOT be related to the build date of the VIN, ie the car was driven gently to be broken in for the suggested period THEN taken to the drag strip where the marginally talented Ricky Racer original owner blew the ______________ (fill in your mechanical component) sky high and the dealer replaced it under warranty. That said, the car could have sat on the lot unsold for months and when the destruction of the _______________ occurred it could be several months (or even a year or more) after the actual build date of the VIN (or body trim tag) ... |
