Leaf Blowers as Superchargers!
Have the guys at Hot Rod been watching too much Red Green?
Tough to argue w/ cheap Hp but their engineering kinda blows! http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/e...r/viewall.html ~ Pete |

Re: Leaf Blowers as Superchargers!
I bet there is something to this. I dont think the leaf blowers are able to create a signifigant amount of positive pressure, they can just move a lot of air if there isnt much restriction, kind of like how an "asperator" on a Detroit Desiel that just pushes fresh air into the 2 stroke engine at low speeds can be spun faster and turned into a supercharger on 4 stroke engines. I figure that it because the impeller isnt moving fast enough, and is probably direct drive to the engine. If you stepped up the speed via a gear set it might actually make boost, even with just one. Of course the blower impeller would probably explode if your quadrupled the speed. Maybe a strong electic motor turning about 5000 rpm with a 1:20 gearset on it would really make some boost if you used a good steel housing/impeller setup.
This would be great power at the flick of a switch. An air intake tube between the blower and throttle body/carb with a Y in it that had a 1 way flapper that allowed air in when the blower wasnt running would make it work. Hmmmmm?? |

Mercedes Benz has electronic motor powered Superchargers.

Great link Stefano!
Not Benz equipment though, aftermarket units for different applications including MB cars. Cheap HP, I want one!!! ~ Pete |
Re: Leaf Blowers as Superchargers!
The aftermarket electric supercharger goes way back! I remember about 10 years ago discussing this at length with the Pontiac guys, many were wondering if these glorified leaf blowers could supply enough air for a big V8.
The company is called e-Ram, and while their product seems to be valid, the cost per hp is not very appealing. http://www.electricsupercharger.com/ Cool idea though, and I think anyone that's ever thought about this when they're blowing leafs in the yard (that time of year around here!) wonders whether they could build something like this. The e-Ram develops 800 cfm and 1 psi, and is very compact. Imagine a couple of these mounted around the core support area, tucked in the corners, and couple 66-69 Olds W-30 style hoses running up to your sealed air box. Hmmm..... While they can generate some positive pressure in a sealed air cleaner housing, it takes a lot more air flow than that to generate a positive pressure when a big V8 is gulping 800 cfm of air under full throttle. |
Re: Leaf Blowers as Superchargers!
A friend of mine owns a carpet cleaning company and they use twin rotor roots type blowers to supply the vacuum. They are belt driven with a small (10 hp) gas engine.
Now how do I convince him to switch the intake and exhaust tubes and route them to the air intake? We're headed to the DRAG STRIP! |
