transmission value

I am curious about the value of automatic transmissions. I pay more attention to the manual transmissions but are the TH400's worth much to anyone or are they basically cores? I know they have tags riveted to the side with some information but I don't see a lot of these roll through the classifieds. I am cleaning the garage so there is a more specific reason for the question but I would like to know first.

69 code CX.? T 400's (solid lifter BB) are worth a ton, not easy to find. Tag attachment/proof is paramount.

The one in my way is a CD coded trans from a 72 Chevelle LS3 car.

Re: transmission value

'CD' transmissions are not that valuable, I have one as well from a '68 Impala. They are worth the going rate for a TH400 in rebuildable condition, IMHO ~$350-$500.

The higher the second letter the higher the performance level.

Re: transmission value

higher as in 'A' being the highest letter or 'Z' being the highest letter? I assume 'Z' since the special TH400's are CY and CX, but is that the way they assigned the codes back then??

Re: transmission value

In general, that's true.Z being the higher letter I think he means, as in CA vs. CY.
High performance applications generally got higher part numbers.
As they assigned numbers, the docile got the beginning, then greater numbers were assinged to go fast & heavy duty stuff.

This wasn't ALWAYS the case, but mostly.

Around here, I am lucky to get $150 out of a Turbo 400 core that isn't something special. Don't know about anywhere else.
