Help identifying this tranny

Looking for some help indentifying this transmission (what it came out of) - at first glance I thought it was out of a 66 Vette but the sequence # is too high for the 66 production total (22k or something) correct?

When I saw the headline "Help identifying this tranny", I fully expected to see a photo like this:

That looks like 1966 Corvette to me. St. Louis vin.... only the Corvette was produced there.

beat me to it matt. the S in the vin is corvette. should be an m-21, unless there is an extra plug in it.

Re: Help identifying this tranny

That was my initial thought but there was only about 22k Corvettes built that year and if I'm correct the sequence started at 100001 and went up sequentially. Not sure how it could have the vin it does if it was a vette - am I missing something?

I recall reading somewhere that GM produced both trucks and big cars in St.Louis as well.

Under Production Notes:

"St Louis & Flint were Chevrolet truck plants, although Chevy had full-size car plants in both cities and in St Louis the plants were adjacent."

That transmission is out of a '66 Impala built at St. Louis, ID'd by the high VIN sequence number. St. Louis was the largest assembly plant in the U.S. in the 60's - had a 60 per hour Fisher Body-Chevrolet Impala/Caprice line, a 35 per hour truck line, and the Corvette plant, all on the same site. St. Louis was also the sole site for all of the Corvair-based forward-control light trucks (Corvan, Rampside, window van, etc.). I launched the '68 Corvette there in '67, and launched the '69 Impala/Caprice there in '68.
