Clutch options
Having more clutch issues with the Malibu!..very chattery and a super stiff pedal..something is not right! Currently using a Centerforce II dual friction pressure plate and disc. Hooks up good.a little chatter if your not rough with it...but the pedal pressure is bending the linkage!...what does everyone like to use..Hays??..Ram??.try another centerforce?...think Ill have a spare clutch ready so when I open it up I have a replacement if I need it..thanks

Re: Clutch options
What flywheel are you running? I must admit, I am not real familiar with the Centerfore II Dual Friction configuration. Is this a diaphragm PP? How about the friction material on the clutch, does it have puck friction spots on one or both sides?

Re: Clutch options
I use the Hays Street/Strip setup behind my ZL-1 4 speed. Great hold and not too stiff pedal. Summit Racing has the kit, you just have to call them and ask for it.

Re: Clutch options
I have a Ram Powergrip in my Chevelle. Pedal pressure is light, hasn't slipped at all behind the 496, engagement is smooth as butter.

Re: Clutch options
From what you described, seems like either the clutch linkage may be incorrect/misconfigured or the pressure plate is too strong.
I have a Spec Stage III clutch in a car which takes some getting used to. It is a bit too grippy to pass for OE, but it doesn't chatter. I've been told by others that the next rated clutch level- a Stage III Plus offers smoother engagement with all things being equal. Before you jump onto the next clutch manufacturer's offering, it probably is worth the call into Centerforce. They may offer you a more compatible PP or disc are a lower rate to ensure a happy customer and a positive review on the net. Wouldn't be bad to include a link to this thread either. I've used Zoom, Hays, Centerforce, Spec and others all with positive experiences. Anytime things were less than ideal, it seemed to have been a mismatched clutch for my expectations or application. I would love to hear how CF tried to help make a happy customer. |
Re: Clutch options
I have run McLeod clutches for 10 years. Really like their Kevlar/organic disc with a diaphragm pressure plate. I have a 65 road race Pontiac with a McLeod sintered iron Rev-Lok clutch that's still pretty streetable with low pedal effort.

Re: Clutch options
Al.......If you have the wrong length pivot ball inside the bellhousing, it can cause some issues as the pedal is pushed down as it will try to pull the input shaft sideways with increased pedal pressure..... which will take out the pilot bearing eventually..........Don't ask how I know that!!

Re: Clutch options
Also......I have a standard Centerforce in my 66 Nova (stock 283) and when it gets a little hot it "Chatters" like crazy.......Gonna put stock GM stuff back in at some time....

Re: Clutch options
I had the same concerns as what Ken is experiencing, so I went with GM stuff in both the Yenko and in the '69.
