Repro plate frames
I like the looks of the dealer plate frames but I am coming to the conclusion I will never find one for my car. Is there a source that can make one up? Thanks, Dustin

Re: Repro plate frames
Will be at least a couple grand to make up a proper die. We use some rapid prototype processes at work that I can check up on.
What dealer are you looking for? |
Re: Repro plate frames
This is a very interesting topic. After firt reading it I did some surfing and there is definitely some setup fees as mentioned by Tony above. Also, I would imagine a certain number would have to be ordered (EG - 250).
I wonder if you could just buy one plane chrome frame (for example) and get a vinyl strip printed to adhere to the frame. I'm no lawyer, but there may be some copyright issues. However, it could be free advertising for dealers still in business and may not be any problem for dealers that are no longer active. I would love to have one saying "Dunlap Chev - Macon, Georgia". |
Re: Repro plate frames
Don't feel bad, although your hunting feverishly for ones specific to your car,you may never find them because they don't exsit. Not every single car dealership had License plate frames made up for themselves. It was at their own discretion to order them from an aftermarket company back then & was rather expensive,so many did not do it all.It depended how much profit/risk a dealership was willing to take on back then.
You can get a custom made License plate frame nearly anywhere today,in both chrome metal & hard plastic, but they use todays technology like lazer etching or a hard vinyl applique respectively. Some of them look cheesey and not at all close to what the originals were 40 some years ago. Type in "custom made license frame" on the eBay search box and you'll see hundreds of design ideas to choose from. The usually charge $5 each, and although not at all like some may want, they are very inexpensive compared to the vintage frames most desire. Hiring a company today to tool up for the vintage potmetal chrome ones would be extremely costly for the final outcome I would think. |
Re: Repro plate frames
I know not all dealerships had them but I can still dream. I thought about casting one myself but would be more work than it's worth. I also looked at the cheezey ebay ones but they don't look right. I can't believe I am willing to pay for somebody elses advertising because I don't spend much on our own. Dustin

Re: Repro plate frames
You might be able to get a custom jeweler to make one using the lost wax process. Won't be cheap, but probably cheaper than getting dies made for die casting process.

Re: Repro plate frames
I am thinking if your dealer did not put one on originally I probably would not worry about it. maybe a trunk emblem was used from your dealer?
