spark plug heat shields

On small blocks,Z-28/LT-1, the heat shields always seem to be turning white after running for awhile. Anyone else have this problem and maybe a solution??..I'm sure it has something to do with them being repro parts and cheap galvanizing (I think) Putting a 67Z together and want to address this before its all together. Thanks

Albert

I don't think the originals were galvanized. When I did my 67Z, I found some decent originals and had them silver cad plated. If I remember correctly, one side had two-piece heat shields, the other had one-piece.

Here are photos of originals that were removed very early in the car's life, as in on the first day to install the factory headers. These are off Jon Mello's (1967z28) unbelievable survivor that he sold some time ago:

Note how the lower bracket of the 2-piece shields have engine paint on them.
