Calling the '70 LT1 gurus!

I have dropped off my Mallory dual point (non-vacuum, mechanical-only advance) distributor to have it set up on a Sun machine. The engine is stock except for this distributor which I will be installing later. Based on the stock cam when should my advance be in?

Thanks!

Hey Sam, sorry - K wrote down your call info, just saw it last night! For the LT1's we like to see 36'ish total degrees of advance, all in by 2-2.5k rpm. If my memory is good, I think that is where I set mine for the initial baseline. Then I simply tweaked it a little here and there based on 'seat of the pants' and drag runs.

You can run a little more although the 36 is good, but you need the good racing fuel. A colder plug range doesn't hurt either.

Schoneye is right, but this is where I started tweaking:

1. With straight 110 I put more timing into it.
2. Went with a hotter plug to reduce fouling, eventually went with NGK's - swear by 'em now.
3. Also switched to a Blaster coil - no difference that I could tell, but just wanted a new coil 'just in case' my 293 were to act up.
4. I recall smooting the idle a bit by adjusting the fuel mixture screws via a vaccuum gauge. Not dist related, but it gave me a nice smooth idle from which to anaylze the dist curve a little better - no Sun machine in my garage!
