Exhaust clamp size.
If my exhaust pipes are 2 1/4" O.D. would I use a 2 1/4" clamp? The muffler that you insert the 2 1/4" exhaust pipe into will obviously have a larger OD than 2 1/4" - I want to make sure that a clamp described as 2 1/4" will accomodate this.
Thanks! Anyone use Rick's or Steve's Camaro clamps that are claimed to be repro OEMs? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...nts/SES-24.jpg |
Re: Exhaust clamp size.
My 'educated guess' is that the specified clamp size is designed for whatever outside diameter surface it will be clamping on. In other words, if you have a 2 1/4" OD exhaust pipe and it will be going inside a muffler inlet or outlet, and you will be squeezing the OD of the muffler inlet/outlet, you will need a larger clamp than 2 1/4". That's my guess, and I'm stickin' to it

Re: Exhaust clamp size.
So Bill, are you saying a 2 1/4" clamp is for 2" exhaust pipe?

Sam
I'am thinking you need some old enlisted guy to clue you in, or check with Ed, he is Italian, he will know what to do. |

Re: Exhaust clamp size.
Thanks Dave - I think I remember you introducing him. Chris - that is NOT funny. Quit it!!!! Mikey is just pressing my button(s)! (BTW- the Italian from Gilbert, AZ did NOT know either - he just started babbling about millimeters & metric-this and centimeters that and all his words ended in "-ini". I guess that's what I would be saying, since AFAIK exhaust clamps are only incremented in 1/4" graduations. |
Re: Exhaust clamp size.
FWIW - I talked to a muffler shop manager today and he stated that industry standard is that exhaust pipe uses OD to indicate its size for clamps and mufflers use ID. So a 2 1/4" exhaust clamp will fit over a muffler inlet/outlet with a 2 1/4" ID. In other words the 2 1/4" clamp will accomodate the larger (actually measured at 2 3/16") outside diameter of the muffler inlet/outlet.
Anybody buy Ricks or Steves clamps pictured above? Thanks |
