70 LT-1 Smog Pump
I am looking for a little advice / insight as to what I may be up against. My smog pump on my 70 LT-1 is getting noisy. Any tricks to minimize it? How bad is it to rebuild it? I have never done one before. Some pictures would be great also.
In advance, Thanks, Tim |
Re: 70 LT-1 Smog Pump
The bearings seldom go bad in those things but can happen. I would devein the pump if you have not done so already to make it inop...

Re: 70 LT-1 Smog Pump
What am I pulling out to 'devane" it? Will that cause a problem with heat build up in the tubes and the check valves?
Thanks |
Re: 70 LT-1 Smog Pump
Tim, you open the backside and remove the front pulley and fan. Then you can use a small cutter and cut out the paddles or fan blades which are plastic inside the pump. This will allow the pump to spin freely and cause no drag on same. You can also check to see if the bearing is bad at this point. It is tricky getting the entire unit to come apart and drive the shaft out. You run the risk of damaging the bearing doing this. I have done it before without removing the entire shaft and pulling the entire pump apart.
SYC member m22mike has taken these apart to devane them and removed the shaft before.... I'm really not sure if this will cause heating problems within the system. If you are making the system inop or non functional by devaning the pump I would plug off the exhaust manifold smog holes prior to screwing the tubes in. This shuts off any and all hot exhaust gas that may enter the tubes and or heat the system. Rich |
