Color coding NOS SHP parts
 

Can anyone tell me what the significance was/is of the three
colors seen on many NOS SHP parts? I'm referring to the
white, green, and purple colors seen on many rods, cranks, blocks, etc...

I believe that the workers would make a mark when their process was done. Either that or to identify certain parts.

When parts left a certain dept. the end packout guy or last man put a dab of paint to show he checked it before it left. The colors differed by shift, days may use purple and afternoons may have used yellow.

A lot of times marks were made to show a part had been thru a process already.

And certain models of parts get dabs to quickly I.D. them.

not exactly ...

the parts are color coded by application

ie "pink" rods, those were the special performance ones

the colors differentiated the applications, ie HD, performance, passenger, etc

When I worked at Pontiac in the very early 70's all the "good" stuff carried purple dabs

I know what you are talking about. All the ZL-1 and L-88 stuff has the Purple, Green, White color codes. I saw an NOS hipo big block with these as well. Here is ZL-1(L-88) crank and rod:

I'm sure they were inspection marks. Each color signified a completed inspection. The special colors do match for SHP, I don't know why. But whenever I see those colors I get wood! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif

I think what you just said is what I what myself and the other guy said, certain models got certain colors.

I ran packout for many years and each front pump that left the dept had a green mark that I had to put on it. Afternoons used yellow. This is still done today. An automatic transmission will have a ton of paint marks inside it.

a hi-po axle shaft has purple paint on it, the lo-po (is that a word) ones had a different color (can't remember, only remembered the "good" stuff colors), nothing to do with what shift, it was application based, not shift or employee

Different model of part, low po and high po. What I said and what the guy above me said.

Not all marks are for models, some are for shift and some are a check mark meaning the part passed a certification point.
