Muncie transmission stampings.... Discussion

1 Attachment(s)
I have a 1965 Muncie M20 currently listed on ebay that has a crooked assembly stamp code. Now, I have owned literally hundreds of Muncies over the years and have seen almost everything when it comes to these transmissions. Alot of the 1963-1965 Muncies that I come across have sloppy vin and assembly codes, almost as if they were not gang stamped. An ebayer contacted me and stated that the trans was a definite "restamp" since it was so sloppy. I responded that there is no way, since I have seen too many crooked stamps for this to be considered a restamp.... plus the fonts are correct. To quote him... "You have to look at this practically, even the VIN is crooked, and VIN stamps in GM plants were gang stamps - I was there - there was specific legal control and these are not factory. Most likely since you are picking these up 45 years late is someone replaced their trans and the installer or dealer pounded in the numbers in a bare case."

Iam always willing to learn something new. If I am wrong I would like to be set straight by someone who knows better than me.

Matt, I don't collect any information on '65-up trans stampings, but I can tell you that earlier ones had a variety of VIN stampings. Some plants used a gang holder and some used individual characters.
The statement that all plants used a gang for the VINs is completely inaccurate. The genesis for restamps was in the Corvette hobby, and by FAR, the most easily detected block or trans restamp is one that uses the small St. Louis font in a gang on other assembly plant components. (that's how their operation is set up and they haven't done the research to know what a real stamp should look like from other plants).

Matt: My 66 M-21 from my 66 chevelle looked very similar to your photo. It is a numbers match car and the numbers were not gang stamped. Hope this helps.

here are some pics of a 6-64 M20, installed in early 65:

so, I'd say that the pic you show is not a re-stamp
