sealing copper head gasket
OK, so it isn't a race car. I am installig a copper head gasket on my BMW turbo car. I run 15 - 18 psi boost. Had a copper head gasket that lasted 5 years before the water sealing failed. Block is "O" ringed and head has receiver groove. I used Yamabond around the water / oil passages. Trying to find something that won't fail, even after five years.
Saw recommendations for Hylomar, but they make three different kinds of RTV. Look here: http://www.hylomar.co.uk/index.php?o...&Itemid=56 Do I use the 100, 300 or 600, or possibly another Hylomar product? It will only be applied around water / oil passages. Anyone have experience with Hylomar? Figured someone on this board was using copper head gasket on something. Thanks. Lynn Doing some more reading, and am now thinking I need the universal blue RF. Anyone with experience? |

Re: sealing copper head gasket
I had copper gaskets on my biblock from 1999 to 2007 when the engine finally blew up,and had no failure,so maybe my setup worked.I had an O ringed block and non grooved heads with .060" thiick gaskets.I used blue hylomar gasket spray.I put a heavy coat on the block and heads, and a few coats on both siides of the gaskets.I let it set up for about 10 minutes, then layed it all together and torqued the heads down right away.I did add a little tube of cheap stop leak as insurance, but I never had water in the oil no matter how much I accedently overheated it or shot tons of nitrous thru it.Good luck.

Re: sealing copper head gasket
Thanks Rich. I had a .078 gasket, and am going to a .062 assuming I don't have valve clearance issues. Will find out tonight. Block is "O" ringed and head has receiver grooves.
