66 vette BB side exhaust original or reproduction

Anyone know how to tell the difference between original, over the counter and reproduction 66 corvette BB side exhaust? Thanks, Dan

The sound is one thing, they tend to be a bit louder. Originals are mellower. Also the pipe welded into the chambered part is thinner on the originals. There's a definite step-up going into the chambered part. Reproduction pipes have a thicker pipe leading into the chambered part of the pipe. If it is NOS, it may have the part number tag on it. The chrome end piece is also larger on the reproduction sidepipes I've seen.

If you are considering purchasing reproduction side exhaust, please reconsider. Allen's exhaust will make your Corvette sound like a UPS delivery truck. I realize NOS side pipes are more expensive than repro, but the sound is worth the extra money.

Dave and Tim covered all bases here. If you're looking for a driver quality system and the car is never going to be shown, still buy NOS pipes. Dave is not kidding about the UPS truck sound. Nothing is worse than stainless steel side pipes.
