Fuel Pump Metallurgy

I have a 68/69 vintage 40170 fuel pump that requires a tig weld on the mounting flange. Anyone know what this flange is made of? Looks like magnesium.
Thanks,
Rick Thayer https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Alum. If welded slow and welded just the back of the flange, you should be ok. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: Fuel Pump Metallurgy

Has it developed a crack near one of the bolt holes from being over torqued,or does it have an irregular mounting face created during casting?

Re: Fuel Pump Metallurgy

Reportedly it was misinstalled years ago and cracked on the inside of the left hand bolt hole, so it was removed and never used (NOS). Not a problem to repair, just wanted to get set up with the right gas and wire for the metal at hand. Any thoughts are appreciated. Cumby says Kim is no wizard!!!

Weld it, then machine the back side. I wouldn't weld the front, nobody will see it. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif
