a picture of the part or the description on the part number flap as well as the group number will get it narrowed down much further

Re: GM part number 3869316...what is it?

of course....it is a box from a rear diff unit I believe...
GR 5.510.....I believe the part I have is correct, but the part number on the box does not seem to be the part that is in the box...I'm thinking the number may be a service replacement number??? thanks again

Re: GM part number 3869316...what is it?

one more book and I found it:

LOTS of coverage:

case, differential less gears

72 Chevelle P.T. with 4:10
67 Chevelle P.G. w/AIR exc P/Trac, 3.08, 3.36, 3.55, 3.70 ratio
67-68 Camaro, Chevy w/ 2.56, 2.73, ratio exc P/Trac
68-69 Pass w/T.H. 2.56, 2.73 ratio exc P/Trac
68 Chevelle w/2.73 ratio exc P/Trac
69 Chevy, Chevelle, Camaro w/2.56, 2.73 ratio exc P/Trac
70 All w/2.56, 2.73 ratio exc P/Trac
71 Chevelle, Nova w/2.56, 2.73 exc P/Trac

similar numbers:

my 71 dated parts book calls for 3869315 as being a case less differential gears for 71 chevelle, nova w/p/Trac w/3.07, 3.31, 3.55 ratio (Eaton ED 30140) use w/ 12 bolt cover

that is one number off what yours is ...

3869314 is for a 64-71 Corvette ... and is an Eaton 30117

3869316 was issued in '65 and was carried through at least '68. It's listed as a diff case for '65-'68 Pass with Posi-traction (4.10, 4.56 & 4.88 ratio) Eaton # ED 30174.

Thanks alot Jim....

so that narrows it down... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

...it could be anything from a 4.10 posi to a 2.56 open rear for basically all applications?????????

Actually what came in the box was an NOS COPO 234 posi unit, correct for a 69 Camaro or Chevelle believe it or not...I've had this part for years and was a bit worried when I recently noticed the part number on the box itself...but I have confirmation that the part itself is correct...(Thank Goodness)...apparently not the original box....
