Hidden vin mystery?
 

I have a 69 10A-68 LA gold, brown top, white deluxe int., and a matching number drivetrain. I have a POP, sales agreement, court doc(ticket for loud exhaust),that was factory chambered, pay off records, pictures, and original key knockouts. My concern is the vin on the dash (9L503244) is the same by the oil filter and top of tranny and all match. I took the heater box off and there is no vin there. The top of the cowl is stamped (8L103028)and want to know if anyone can tell me why it is like this? This car was painted blue in 1983. There is gold paint under the blue. There are original chalk markings on upper cowl. I had a body man look at the cowl area and the body. He has 15 1969 Camaros and 5 1969 Camaros in restoration process. To his knowledge he says cowl has never been removed. I know you can't see the car to make judgement but all body panels, 1/4s, and deck lid are stamped with H codes. On the cowl in front of driver is stamped H/9C. Some people who have not seen car think cowl was removed or replaced. If this is the case 68 vins start with 300000. In a previous post there were some cars in the LA plant that started vins with 100000 but not Camaros. Any help or explanation would be appreciated.

I have an early California built camaro and is the same ,they just didnt stamp the vin under heater

Are you saying that the vin stamp on the cowl is different? I have seen a few cars that do not have a vin stamp next to the blower motor, that is not too unusual.

David, yes vin on cowl is diff than the other vins.

The rule of thumb is that the cowl and the dash match and for LA cars, it is true that some did not get a vin stamped in the heater area for some reason. If the cowl has not been changed then the vin on the dash may have been changed. How does the body production number on the trim tag and line up with the VIN number?

Also- the vin on the motor - i thought they put those next to the oil filter on the later production cars - like after Jan 69 etc....you need to check this point as well.

That's strange, especially if the quarters are original to the body and dated correctly. Any chance that cowl partial VIN matches the trim tag number? This sounds like a really strange situation.

the production #LOS130592 ON TRIM TAG, pad on block VO926DZ,by oil filter is just what is there the correct vin matching to car doc's and dash.LA plant oct. vin's #'s starting 1st of month are 502311-506631 so 503244 would be around 10a. if some removed dash vin to another car why would vin 8L103028 be on cowl period. this is not even a camaro vin.if someone put a different cowl on car where would you find one with a vin like that on a 68. if you can tell me about production # i would like to know.thanks

Thats not even a 68 Camaro VIN, would have to have come from a full size Chevy. I could see some one at LA grabbing the wrong model line vin stamper (they did make impalas, chevrolets in addition to Camaros) if it was the same model year.

LA is famous for not stamping the heater area VIN, no big surprise ther.
