68 manual steering box question?

Ok guy's just wondering if GM had a couple different manual steering boxes. I was rebuilding my original 68 L78 manual steering box last night and it has a cast cover on it. I had another manual box out of a 68 nova also that has an aluminum cover on it. The only difference I know of is mine was a big block car and the other one was a smalll block car. Without taking the small block one apart. Just curious and was wondering what the difference was. Did the BB cars get a different steering box?

I don't know about the '68s, but both of our '69 big block cars have the aluminum cover.

Interesting! I will have to get some numbers off them this weekend and see what I come up with when I google them.

The August 1968 issue of Chevrolet Service News has an article that may apply to your car. "1967 Camaro Manual Steering Gears Used in 1968 Production" states that Norwood builds from N438680-N448071 and LA builds from L338182-L359064 [est] had '67 manual steering gears. It was notable because they had to also use 1967 steering arms, pitman and idler arms. 1968 components were different.

This is my 68 manual steering box all rebuilt. Is this the same unit as the 67 camaro you were referring to?

No, that is a '68 pitman arm and a '68 steering box. The assembly date indicates it was put together on the 124th day of 1968.

I've seen both combos in my travels. There is both aluminum and cast, but I haven't been able to ascertain what goes with what car/engine combo. My best bet has always been to restore the unit that came off of the vehicle. Just when I think that I have a year or application nailed down, Saginaw boxes tell me somethin' different. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif

PS - If anyone needs their manual steering boxes restored and rebuilt, jus' lemmie know. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif

Casey did a fantastic job on the box for my Chevelle.

Speaking of which, Casey, I just recently figured out what happened to my old pitman arm, so I need to send you a pitman arm back. My apologies for your inconvenience, it wound up being a brain cramp on my part. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/blush.gif

Could you email me your mailing address again?

Thanks.
