Looks pretty sweet. Are you going to install it just the way it is or are you going to make it look brand new?

Re: 1972 Camaro Z28 Driveline
Thats a nice engine/trans/rearend!, I know the whereabouts of a complete 70 chevelle LS-6 engine/trans/shifter/driveshaft/misc parts, etc.. which was pulled many years ago in favor of a different engine to go dragracing, Ive recently made an offer to purchase everything she has left. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

What happened to the car this stuff came from? [/ QUOTE ] I purchased the driveline from the owner of the car. He built an aluninum headed 406, 5-speed and a ford 9" and put in the car. One reason he did not hang on to this was original owner had to warranty the short block so the block was a CE code, so he decided he would not go the "original" route. (If I owned the car I would have put it all back) Here is a picture I took while picking up the engine. http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/n...x/101_0649.jpg I peaked at the mileage and it was 48K, not sure how many miles were put on after removal of the 350 but he stated he took it out last year. |
Re: 1972 Camaro Z28 Driveline
Car would be worth more with the original drivetrain in place, CE block and all. To each his own, I guess.
Just curious about that water pump pulley. Is that a 302DZ large diameter pulley? My 70 Z-28 has the 458 smaller diameter L-78 big block pulley installed. Paul |
Re: 1972 Camaro Z28 Driveline
nice score. I am restoring a 72 Z. if you descide to sell the exh manifolds/smog and the distrib, please keep me in mind. thanks.

Re: 1972 Camaro Z28 Driveline
Pretty car but, in my opinion, the owner just destroyed any future value for that car. As it stands right now it is nothing more than a nice Camaro since it no longer has the original rear, trans or engine components. I don't think the CE block would have hurt that car too bad; oh well to each his own.

Re: 1972 Camaro Z28 Driveline
Great you got the parts and nice to know they're w/ someone appreciates and knows what they have!.
It's a shame about the car though considering the low #'s of '72 Z-28's built...the lowest production next to the '67's.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif ~ Pete |
Re: 1972 Camaro Z28 Driveline
Very cool find. I cant believe someone would part with it.

Re: 1972 Camaro Z28 Driveline
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/crazy.gif How long has he owned the car? Maybe he's the type who will be bored with it in two years and you can pick it up or make some $$ off of the new owner. Wouldn't be a crazy idea to keep it all together for the future rebuild. What did they build, ~1200 '72 Zs? It's not 1978 anymore...

Re: 1972 Camaro Z28 Driveline
There were 2575 Z28's built in '72 - rarer then that though - there were only 942 Camaro's built with an M21!
But to each his own - enjoy! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif |

Would still be quite valuable, but hey if he is not going to do so then I need a good engine for my 71 Z28 which has long since been missing it's engine and trans. http://www.gearheadmex.com/images/paintdone002800.jpg And it looks like I could help some guys out with the parts I won't be needing. |

Re: 1972 Camaro Z28 Driveline
Not that he "needed" to keep it stock (even though being low mile, clean and what it is pushes hard that way) but keeping the original/stock parts is the biggie.

Nice score! I'd double check the date settings on your camera though. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif

Update to this post
I ended up selling this engine complete to a member here (He can identify if he would like) right after this post around 06/18/2008. He had a 72 Z28 complete minus engine, so this fit him nicely so he could put another 72 Z28 back on the road. Great guy and transaction. I kept in touch with him over the years as to progress of getting the Z put together. Well like many of us other things and cars were more of a priority so nothing was done. He contacted me a year or so ago about thinning his collection as his ability to finish his project cars was diminishing. After selling one of my cars, 67 Chevelle Malibu, I thought of this person and contacted him and asked about the Z28. He stated that the car was still being stored and the engine had never been opened in the crate as I sold him. After some discussions we came to a fair selling price and I purchased the Z28 and the engine I sold him 13+ years ago. The car is now in my shop and I am readying the car for engine and transmission install. I gave the girl a bath after getting the car to my shop and what a difference that made by getting all the years of storage dust off. Then one night I decided to get out my buffer, rubbing compound and polishing compound, and Wow, she is looking real good now. She is not perfect but I like the character she has now. So I plan to get her on the road and drive/show it as it is for a while before thinking of a restoration. Ill add some pictures. |
Funny hows things happen sometimes. Looks like a cool, fun project.

Great story. Good for you!

Cool news also seems like all somehow meant to be?:hmmm: Is that your '71 in the background also it + '72 drivetrain donor + recent arrival '72 all red cars? Love to see/hear more of the '73 'Velle on the lift. :beers: ~ Pete . |
Congrats! Funny how things work out.

Can't go wrong with a red/ black stripe Z.

Love the '73 Malibu; that, to me, was the best of the colonnade body style with the round tail lights.

Oh throw some cherries on the cake... Is it a 3 pedal car as as well? :3gears: |
ohhhh 454! nice -
love the 72 Z as well, I believe I remember the red car without drivetrain being for sale. There was a flame orange CE 4 spd bare bones stripper Z for auction last year or two. A Mulsanne Blue Blue RS Z28 auto born with numbers project traded immediately about 2 years ago for under 10k on CL- needed everything but LOADED - dlx inte dlx belts rubber trimmed bumpers VE3 - spoilers- rear defog etc 72 Z28s which are good cars with the correct original components where WE who SHOW the cars and BUY THE PARTS expect them to be and are well done or VERY GOOD am restos with born with drive trains trade in the 50k range RS add -5k loaded ADD 5k - auto (-)7000- auto column (-)10000. The better done the car the quicker it will trade at 50-60. - I had a 72 Z28 bought - As soon as I got photos of the original interior, chassis, and engine compartment I sent an email agreeing to the advertised price. 2 owner - current since 1990 - light yellow 4 speed exterior style trim dlx interior - the owner backed out decided he didn't want to sell it, I told him I would be willing to give him an additional 8k- He said when he took the photos for me - he had forgotten how nice it really was and now really wanted to keep it. |
