O K before I do this. {attachment} anybody know if you heat plexiglass to bend it to a shape?

Re: Hood Scoop

I think Lexan would be a better investment than Plexiglas..... it's not breakable.

Re: Hood Scoop

Actualy isn't not plexiglass it's cast acrylic

Re: Hood Scoop

Acrylic bends with heat, cant recall what gas you use though, at working pulling a all nighter if you dont figure it out let me know I can call my buddy in the morning, with the right gas it can be tweaked and even flows out any blems like scratches, pretty neat to play with and flow out scratches.

I played with regular gas out of the gas/acy torches on some the engraving I did if your really careful it can be done that way but sometimes leaves a blem where you were with the heat. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

I recall something in one of my craft from years ago. It was a heat strip (electric) that was used to bend acrylic sheeting. I have a new issue of the catalog at work, but nothing here at home. If I find something tomorrow morning I'll give you a call. Sometime before noon 'cause I gotta spend the rest of the day at an outdoor wedding. Forecast: rain, hail, high winds! Friday the 13th! Go Figure!!!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

I remember an article in one of those late 50's pocket size Hot-Rod mags where they were making a small bubble canopy for a Bonneville type car..
They made a wooden buck w/ the desired shape, put the material on top and slipped the whole thing into the local Pizza place oven and heated it just enough to take on the shape..
It worked beautifully and was crystal clear!.

Re: Hood Scoop

OK, I checked the latest catalog and the heat strip is no longer listed. However, they do say that Acrylic sheeting can be bent and formed by heating it to 250-300°.

What's the output temp of a hair dryer/heat gun? Maybe check it with an oven thermometer. Could be you have what you need at home???????

I think I'm going to set it on a small metal pipe and heat it with a plumber propane tank. Thanks guys https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: Hood Scoop

Try a scrap piece first.............and go sloooooooow.

If you try to heat it too quick or too hot it will bubble and blister.

budnate 06-13-2008 08:54 PM

Re: Hood Scoop

Kim, its touch and go from solid to bending...if you are on it with the torch the air movement from the tip will distort the material when it gets loose to bend and harden that way, find your vynal graphic guy and borrow his heat gun, they get smoking hot with not much air flow..or drive over and use mine https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

cant find my buddy to get the gas mix that is the trick.

Re: Hood Scoop

ok Kim, I caught up with him, the trick is to use Hydrogen & Oxygen to heat acrylic, as it does no throw soot and load the material with crud, use a rosebud tip and your going to need to rig up some kind of jig to hold your bend, as Acrylic has a memory and will try to go back to its original shape when it cools.

he also warned like I said there is a fine line of getting it loose to work with and over heating, if you over heat it, it will make tiny bubbles in the material where you were working and they will not flow out with more heat, the piece is junk at that point unless you can live with the bubbles.

get to work! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

I am looking at building one for a '70's Super Stock tribute car.

What did you use to fasten the pieces together?

Thanks!
