Manifold coating
Need help on the best coating for stock exhaust manifolds on a high end restoration. Looking for closest correct color. Any ideas or preferences?
Thanks |
Re: Manifold coating
IMHO....Don't put a thing on them. Rust is correct.Find a nice set and glass bead, tumble them, then leave them to mother nature. That gray cast paint, coating, whatever just looks like a$$ on a resto.... Flame away guy's!

Re: Manifold coating
Good point! If we could all go back to 1968-70 and walk through the Dealership lots, we'd find rust on virtually every exhaust manifold on every new car there. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif

Re: Manifold coating
If you want to keep the fresh casting look and not the Painted look......Use Calyx......available from resto supply houses.......keeps the casting look for quite a while, when it starts to go away, rub some more on and they look fresh again...........

Re: Manifold coating
In this day and age, many/most of the high dollar restos are "over restored" and generally that is the way many of the owners, enthusiasts enjoy seeing them. Most people enjoy seeing them the way they came off the end of the assy line, before the rust started...........
One method of preventing your manifolds from rusting is to have them coated with a thin "SKIN" of aluminum. There are many companies around the country that do ALUMINUM FLAME SPRAYING. This in turn would be coated with VHT high temp cast blast to acheive the desired cosmetic look. This is not rocket science or one companys secret formula. My .02 |
Re: Manifold coating
I have Calyx on my Chevelle and it's starting to wear thin. Now I'm thinking I'll just let it go for a while and let some of the rust peek through. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

Re: Manifold coating
I'm having Jerry M do mine right now. The wait is long though. He's busy and there is a 6-8 week turn around time.
|
Re: Manifold coating
jerry did mine about 5 years ago. they look like brand new.
|
Re: Manifold coating
I'd be interested to know the cost of this "special" treatment that you are waiting 6-8 weeks for.....
I can have flame sprayed/aluminized manifolds done in Seattle THIS week.....This coating is approx .008 thick and the vendor alledges it doesnt change the complexion of the cast iron. I would then include a can of VHT 1200' Cast Iron paint, so that you can color to replicate the factory look. |
Re: Manifold coating
Chuck...Give Jerry a call and ask him what he charges for the job. Tell him about your connection and see what his response is. 410-781-0418 is his number.

Re: Manifold coating
Mine were ceramic coated and painted with Eastwood's Manifold grey paint.. They look very nice.. I have had them done about 2 years now and have had no rust issues.. I like them looking this way..
When they start to rust I will let them go and then they will look "correct" as it did back in 1970 & discussed earlier in the thread here. Mine will just stay painted and fresh looking a little longer due to being ceramic coated and painted, longer than what came out of the factory!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif Rich |
Re: Manifold coating
Curious to SEE or Read, as to how Ceramic Coating (like Jet Hot ???) changed the complexion of cast iron......how it changed the porous look and rough texture of sand casting ?????
Thanks, |

Re: Manifold coating
Jerry M. can do it as well as the intake, does great work. Cost is approx. 400 for a set I think.

Re: Manifold coating
Jerry did mine seven years ago, and they still look great (photo below). I've had good luck on other cars with Eastwood's "Factory Gray" coating, after lightly blasting to get a clean surface; excellent durability, no touch-up required. Calyx requires regular touch-up, never dries, and judges don't like it - it rubs off on anything that touches it (like white shirt sleeves https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/mad.gif ).

Re: Manifold coating
I've had Jerry M do 3 of my Chevelles and I wouldn't do it any other way. I tried them all, and was always touching up, or completely removing them, sand blasting, re-painting, etc. Since I discovered the re-skinning process, I've never had to redo any of them. I have the smog systems/tubes on the cars, and the last thing I want to do is redo manifolds.

CHEVROLET ORANGE if it's a BB. I have them ceramic coated grey, then CI grey paint, then Chev orange. When the orange burns off the lower portions you have a near perfect orig look. See attached LS6 photo and Z16 photo down the page here: http://www.z16chevelle.com/restoration%20photos.htm
Exhaust manifolds were installed BEFORE engine paint on big blocks. This is proven by several low mile orig paint engines (cars) I've owned and numerous I've seen as well as several color factory photos. Also shows in 60s assy line photos and assy sequence descriptions. Sorry grey guys...... Dave |
Any different thoughts on Exhaust Manifold coatings for over restored show cars in 2022....
I believe the well know shop that "reskins" exhaust manifolds is having them FLAME SPRAYED with....................... Aluminum– Extremely durable coating that provides total corrosion protection and significant life improvement over conventional barrier coatings........... And Then Top Coating with VHT Aerosol Paint for the correct Cosmetic "LOOK" A customer told (on a forum) of how he received a can of VHT paint in the box upon the return of his "Reskinned" Manifolds..... |
I had Jerry M. “Reskin” mine back in 2004. As stated above a can of VHT paint came with them and instructions to spray them and heat them to 600 degrees for a period of time, don’t remember the time.
My friend had an old cooking oven in his shop so we used it turned up as high as it would go which was about 450. My manifolds to this day look great. I would recommend Jerry’s work. |
Anyone,
1) Know the current cost of having a pair of exhaust manifolds "Reskinned" or other wise Arc Sprayed (Electricity) or Flame Sprayed (Oxy/Acetelyne) 2) Ive read about VHT 1200 degree cast blast & POR15 has a Cast Looking Product Which one has the closest look to original Cast Iron ????? |
