Thanks for the warm welcome, I will till you alittle about my self. I usually check out the forum on LS1.com. My brother and I both have GTO's, mine is a 04 Yellow 6MT, and my brothers ( Charlie Jr.) is a 06, 6MT. red. My both have raced at Englishtown ( low 13 ), I guess its just in the family, My father no longer races, he owns a tow and repair garage in Bridgeport Ct. called Mid-Town Auto Body. owned with my uncle Lou and Gus a High school friend, owned since 1983.
When I was around 9 years old, visiting the my grand parents house on Canaan Rd in Stratford Ct. I would beline to the garage to sit in the car, Back then the car was stored in the garage. The car was mint!!!! like it came out of the show room. The paint was back to a org. Navy blue, I think it had the white top at that time. I loved that car, I've been asking my uncle Eddie to buy it since I started to work, I will get into that later. I do have good news for him and bad, hopeing he knows about the bad (miner), not that it would change what the car is. I'm going to end this here for now, If one would like to know more of my the car let me know, and if the owner of the car would perfer to know more in private before I put it ont the forum. he could contact me. I know every thing there is to know about the chevelle since 1977. I do wish it had stayed in the family, but looking at the pics now, I wouldn't have the time or the resources to put the car back to what it should be. Will post again tonight if anyone would to know more. Ron

Not a cool car story, just the truth, of what I know. The cool story is what the car was, back in 67. The cars racing story ended way before 1977. And to the odometer, not even close. Will post again around 11pm est, Have to go out. Ron

Adding to post: I started to tell you about my uncle eddie, I don't know exacty when he purchased the car from my father, I think it was around 1980, If I remember correctly I think he payed 2k for the car. Some how the chevelle ended up sitting out side my grandfathers garage ( Seaside Garage ) on Henry Street in Bridgeport Ct. This is where the chevelle went down hill, It sat between junk cars and tow aways, for years. Every time I seen Eddie I would ask to sell to me,When if he was going to sell it, he would sell it to me, As you know that never happened, I found out he sold the chevelle to a friend named Tom from Trumbull Ct. I was very upset. I would of sold everything for this car, not because of it being what it is, because it was my fathers and if I did restore it, it would be priceless because I would not have sold it for any price.

Re: 67 Baldwin/Motion chevelle 427

When it was at Seaside Eddie did a few upgrades, like adding shaggy rug, blue and white, right out of a 70's show. but I never seen the car move. Now the badddd! While sitting out side Seaside, someone climbed under the car and stole the trany out of it, not the best area. This is want I was told way back, I believe it was the orginal trany not the clutch-flite, not sure. Other additions were side pipes, I didn't like then.and I believe he added roller rockers to the engine. for what, the car never when anywhere. Now the big OUCH. Eddie did take the car out and hit a parked car. took out the nose and the right side frame rail.

Re: 67 Baldwin/Motion chevelle 427

Hello Ron and welcome to the board. I was the one who purchased this car from Tom in Trumbel, CT about 5 years ago, but sold it about 6 months back to another member on the board as I had way too many cars that needed to be restored. It is currently being restored in VA and should be finished in about a year. This car is certainly one of the most significant Baldwin Motion cars that survived. When I purchased the car, it still had the title in the name of Ann Mason who would be your grandmother signed over to your uncle Eddie and then to Tom.

The car was as you described it, still had the remnants of the blue shag carpet, the rear speakers that looked like pipe organs, and the remnants of side pipes. I also found an empty pint of bacardi rum in the car, which perhaps is related to the story you told about your uncle hitting a parked car. The motor and trans were gone, but the original 12 bolt rear was still intact and matched the original protect-o-plate. The front sheet metal was mostly gone as well. The other thing I found interesting was the car had a tow hitch on the back. I spoke with Joel Rosen several times about the car, and he remembered it very well and it remains one of his favorites.

You may have heard the story of how the car went from the original black vinyl top to the white one that you remember. It happenned sometime around 1968 / 69 at New York National Speedway when Joel Rosen himself was racing the car. Apparently the car got sideways near the starting line and left the track and rolled over and came to rest on the roof with Joel inside hanging upside down with his seatbelt holding him in. He wasn't badly injured, but the car then needed a new roof and the old one was cut off and a new one welded on. That's when the car got the white vinyl top.

Joel also indicated that this car was the one and only '67 BM Chevelle that was sold that year as there were very few '67 Baldwin Motion cars built that year of any model as it was the first year of the new program. The original paperwork showed the car was sold from Baldwin Chev. in August of 1967 so that also makes sense as it was the very end of the model year. To my knowledge, it is the only documented '67 BM car of any model that survives except for the Astoria Chas 67 Corvette.

The other thing that was interesting about the car's history is that it was a test bed for many of the new speed parts that were coming out back in the day. It was the first car to run an experiemental edelbrock tunnel ram intake. When the car had the tunnel ram, and the clutch flite trans, it was running 10 second quarters. All of this is in some of the car magazines from the late 60's.
There are about 4 or 5 vintage magazine articles about the car and one in particular tells all about how the car left Baldwin Chevrolet with all the Motion modifications.

I am sure the new owner will contact you soon, but perhaps you culd see if your dad or uncle still have some old photos of the car and post them.

Re: 67 Baldwin/Motion chevelle 427

Maybe you can answer this question I asked about this car before. When did the 427 emblems go on the car?? You can clearly see it has 396 emblems on it in the old pics.
Also Are you sure about it being the only 67 ss Motion car built that year? Back around 1980 There was a burgundy or plum 67 SS427 that used to stree race at the meadows around here and it said Baldwin Motion on the sides of the car!! Wonder if that car was real because I did not think anybody was cloning cars back then. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: 67 Baldwin/Motion chevelle 427

I was also trying to find the car for many years and know a few people who remember the car from back in the day.

I was told at one time it had a heavy metal flake blue paint job. When I first saw the car at Tom's house I saw the metal flake blue paint still on the dash and knew it was the right car.

We then found the old CT reg paper with same plate no. as in the 1967 articles.
The the Baldwin POP was still in the car also.

Great Chevelle

Re: 67 Baldwin/Motion chevelle 427

Don, both Joel and Marty seemed pretty certain it was the one and only newly built BM Chevelle in 67 and the late delivery date (August 67) bears that out. The original magazine that talks about the car as delivered from Baldwin when it set the track record at NY National states it was the 1st one built.

I would not doubt other 67 chevelles were modified at some point at the Motion shop, but I think this is the only one that came through the new Baldwin Motion program and sold new completely modified with the 427.

As far as clones in 1980, there were quite a few in my area including a ton of cloned Z28's, Hemis, SS's and even a Yenko and a Dana Camaro. This is in the Washington DC area when I was in highschool. I bought a REAL 70 Z-28 that year as my first car, and I remember looking at a number of clones before finding a real car which I still own today almost 30 years later.

Can't wait to see the car completed. It is a special one for sure.

Re: 67 Baldwin/Motion chevelle 427

JOEC you are correct about the blue metal flake. Thinking back, in my grand parents house it had metal flake paint, I did forget about that, Thats one more question I will ask my father, when it was painted. You have to understand that my father worked at my grandfathers garage with his brothers. If he wanted he could have repainted the car daily. I did ask my brother about the color when it had lettering. Many of you didn't know the color because of the pic being to dark. The car was two tone. it had the org. color on top and a navy blue on the sides, thats what my father had told him, Its hard to get all the info out of my father because I don't see him all the time and to ask question after question about the car, it may get tiring to hair. So little by little I will find out your questions, Also I read the post from COPO that you purchased the car without the engine? Where's the 427? When Tom had the car I never seen it again. but when he got it from Eddie the engine was in it. Only the trany was missing. will be back alittle later. Ron

MASON 04-19-2008 05:11 AM

Re: 67 Baldwin/Motion chevelle 427

Just talked to my father got alittle info, First he never changed the emblems on the chevelle, when he picked the car up from Baldwin as he can remember they were on the car. The car also had the gears changed and the tranny worked at Baldwin. The car had 5.13 put in. He honestly doesn't remember what year the car was painted the metal flake. Maybe a few more questtins I will ask over the week end. I will be back on around 11 est. Where is the supercar show, sounds great. My brother and I are interested, but to get my father from his work would take alot, we have been trying to get him to Englishtown with us but hasn't gone yet, maybe this year. Ron

Re: 67 Baldwin/Motion chevelle 427

Realistically, I seriously doubt the car will be ready to show until the 2009 SCR. The work has started on the restoration, but it is early in the process.

Once I got the car, I was really shocked to discover the original 12 bolt survived all of years of racing and still matched the POP. I'm not sure what gears are in it now, but from the factory it was a 4:56 rear per the POP, and then Motion installed 4.88's prior to the sale. Later it might have gotten some bigger gears as Ron mentions.

Imagine in 1967 driving 100 miles each way to NY National Speedway with this car having 4.88's and an M-20, setting the B/HR track record 11.50 @ 120+ and then driving home! That's a stout beast!

Hi Mason,
Your dad's car is one of the HOLY GRAILS of the Baldwin Motion combine............
How did your dad wind up at Motion Performance--thru the magazines or seeing Motion run at the track..
When your dad ordered his Chevelle did he initially plan to have Motion throw the whole HI-PO parts book at it.....JoeG

I could be wrong, but don't think any Motion cars got the Hone Overdrive until the 69 model year. There were VERY few cars built in '67 as it was the first year of the new partnership between Motion and Baldwin Chev. and the program was started later in the year. Things really got rolling in '68 and onward.

Re: 67 Baldwin/Motion chevelle 427

i am very happy that Ron has joined the thread. It just makes this car all that more interesting. The parts hunt is on the way right now on the 67 Chevelle. It is coming along quite nicely. As you know the car will have to undergo quite a bit of metal work. Joel and Marty have joined in as well as i am hoping any other information i may get from Ron and his family will make for a nice story on this car. I do not have any pictures as of yet to post. We are getting everything together as we speak. The car will be done by Ricky Smith along with the 68 Baldwin Motion Camaro. Ricky has the 69 RS/SS Z28 JL8 car as well. Needless to say i and Charlie B. are keeping Ricky quite busy. I will start posting some pictures as soon as i have something to post. It will probably be the end of the summer before i get a real start. We were very luck to find someone locally who owned a 67 that he had had for 14 years and never started on the car. He had every piece of trim you could think of and will certainly narrow down the parts time chasing. We have most of the driveline right now and of course the original rearend. We have the date coded engine and a slew of other stuff. Our parts chasing has gone very well. The difficult part of this car will be the metal work. I wish i could say that i thought i would have it done next year, but, it will probably be a couple of years. However this thread and speaking to the original owners family will certainly motivate us.

I know it must my hard to find parts, but now you have a non matching numberrd car, some where the 427 numbers have to be on Baldwins paper work. I know the org 427 was in the car when sold to Tom. So I know the motor is in the area, I I ask Tom, I know he will not tell me anything, but I do have friends that know alot of people. I just hope he didn't ebay it. I will help find it. That engine belongs in that car and needs to be in it. no question about it. It may take some time, but "I WILL FIND THAT ENGINE". no one knows how much that Chevelle means to me. Ron

Re: 67 Baldwin/Motion chevelle 427

I just spoke with Ron on the phone for about 45 minutes. He tells me of his memories of sitting in that car as a child. I told him that in about 2 years he will be able to sit in it as an adult. I am going to restore the car to the way it came from Baldwin Chevrolet & Motion performance. It will be built to the Motion specs, no tunnel ram, no metal flake paint, Blue with blue interior, black top. I will listen to Ron on his best memories of the way he remembered the car. He says he doesn't remember the ladder bars and he will check with his father on any of the technical questions as we proceed with the restoration. He is extremely excited and will be very valuable with his help. I love it when a plan comes together!
