Re: SURVIVOR SHOW
Will there be any judges from the CHEV/VET fest judging @ the Bloomington survivor show?
|
Re: SURVIVOR SHOW
------The Survivor cars will not be judged this first year in an effort to entice people to join in with their original cars. As far as the Camaro on the flyer,,,I cant believe they let that slide by, but dont pre-judge this show for that reason. I believe that a show focusing on originality has merit. We should get behind it and let it play out.........Bill S

Survivor judges need to determine what has been changed and or restored. Were any original(from the factory) parts replaced with an NOS part that are of a later revision or reproduction. Is the car correctly configured for that build period and such. You can roll your eyes all you want, but qualifying judges is critical to any programs integrity. BTW a group of us have already been tested, and it was a very satisfying experience. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |

Re: SURVIVOR SHOW
Make no mistake, I am in favor of the goal. I only question how the Bloomington guys can test survivor judges for other marques when they are not familiar with them in the first place. Maybe you just need to sound convincing. Would you mind relating your testing experience? I'd be interested in knowing what it involves.
Thanks Verne https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif |

Maybe you just need to sound convincing. Would you mind relating your testing experience? I'd be interested in knowing what it involves. Thanks Verne https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif [/ QUOTE ] First I will clear up a misconception. Bloomington Gold Survivor is looking for teams of judges that are focused on specific models and years. For instance I am not interested nor qualified in judging AMC Pacers, although I am sure there is a group for that marque. My focus continues to be camaros, however if I was looking at other chevrolet models I could determine if in fact it they were untouched original since many of the assembly methods and finished were nearly identical. Survivor certification is the first phase. Where your knowledge becomes more critical is during following phases such as Bloomington Gold certification and then Benchmark certification. I would recommend reviewing the Survivor website at survivorcarshow.com If you have any questions I will try to answer them or email Bloomington directly. Verne, regarding testing itself it was comprised of decribing the assembly process used on specific components finishes. We were also asked how we can determine factory original components from NOS and reproduction. We were provided several cars and each of us judged the cars and determined it status in terms of factory originality/survivor. Next was what is referred to as a blindfold test. Basically a car that is as close to 100 factory original as possible is used as a testing standard. We turned away from the car and were asked questions about components used, bolt finishes and markings, paint finishes, plating and standard assembly processes used. I found that part the most satisfying. This is the early stages of this program. Currently our group "Vintage Camaro" are the first and only ones to be tested. Regarding other brands such as Fords and Pontiacs and Mopars they just have to contact Bloomington and have at least 4 judges in your group to move forward. Bill is correct, this years show will not be judged. Cars will be reviewed and seminars will be held to educate car owners and potential judges about this program. BTW Vintage Camaro is a seperate program and will continue to certify cars at the Camaro Nationals at Carlisle. This is our 9th year and have some spectacular survivors being certified such as: 67 Z28 black 68 Z28 white 69 RS Turquois 69 Pace car L78 Another to be announced https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |
Re: SURVIVOR SHOW
Thanks for the explanation Steve. I understand what they're trying to do and I have read all their info about it (I posted the link to it near the top of this thread).
The reason why I asked about the testing procedure was because I don't completely understand how anyone can administer a test (and properly score it) without knowing the answers themselves. I could ask someone what the air cleaner stencil should look like on a Pacer, but I'd have no idea if their answer was accurate or not. I hope their program works, but it's dependant on them certifying knowledgeable people, like you. My earlier comment may have sounded sarcastic and negative, but that was just my concern about their ability to have the knowledge needed to properly certify survivor judges. I hope they can somehow pick the right ones; otherwise those first "certified" cars may not really meet the mark. They need to be as concerned about the outcome of their (and their judges') certification as they are about protecting their trademark on the word "survivor". I think they found themselves in this position by surprise. Since they had the trademark, they finally realized (from the backlash they received) that it had become their obligation to certify every other kind of car in order for it to be called a "survivor". (Either that, or sell trademark licenses to other marque groups.) I feel they didn't realize what a big bite they were taking out of the hobby when they trademarked that term. Do I feel they were pretentious and arrogant when they did that? Yes! Do I feel their new program to certify survivor cars from all other marques is just damage control or to avoid lawsuits over their trademark? Yes! Do I hope it works out for the best interest of the whole hobby? Yes! Verne |
Re: SURVIVOR SHOW
Verne no problem. I don't believe they are worried about lawsuits and such. They have set judging standards which have been in place since the early seventies and survivor in 1990. As you point out they trademarked the term survivor when aplied to a cars status or condition. I think you will agree it is way over used. Many cars listed as survivors on ebay wouldn't qualify, but rather survived and thats about it.
The Bloomington folks realize they aren't intimately familiar with most models/brands outside corvettes and are looking for experts for those models. How this all rolls out remains to be scene. I believe there will be more participation from GM car lines versus Ford & Mopar but all are invited. This program will evolve and we will just have to wait to see the level of response/interest. |

Re: SURVIVOR SHOW
Was there for Corvette show and left this morning (Sunday) and did not attend Survivor show. I did however see a 61 300G being unloaded and went over it. I would say it was the nicest early letter car extant.

Randy,
Very nice photos. Thanks for taking the time. Is this going to be an annual event? I'd like to try to get there next year. Thanks. Phil Woj. |
