Pertronix Ignitions
Any one have any experience with Pertronix......Installed their Ignitor II conversion kits in the Biscayne and it was fine.....I changed Intake Manifolds over the weekend (Put a 069 on) and when I went to start it I have no spark....Power to the coil but nothing else....Don't even know how or what to check next https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/mad.gif......Should'a stuck with the points I guess https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/hmmm.gif

We sell a good amount of those with no problems. Check the air gap from the magnet to the wheel. Maybe jared somthing taking it out & in. That is the only thing I have seen, outside of a burnt unit. The P2 even has a auto shut off if you leave the key on too long. Good luck, Mike P.S. Ken,
I tried one of those and had nothing but problems. I'm sure I set it up properly but the engine would miss and backfire when starting or shutting it off. I went back to points. A set of points and condensor in the glove box is cheap insurance on a trip and easy to change if needed, as opposed to carrying a spare Pooptronics. One less thing to worry about. Verne |

Mine works great, it took away a low rpm surge that I had. I tried one of the Petronix units before doing a distributor rebuild.

I personally can't see what real advantge those ignitions have. My Z goes to 6,800 easy and my race car 30 years ago went to 7,500 with a single point distributor and no problems. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Use a Crane unit and it works flawlessly thus far, but will keep a set of points in the glove box, you never know

Be careful of the rev limiter in the Crane units...I know a couple of folks that have had issues with it kicking in sporadically. As for the Pertronix, they're good when they work...but I've been stranded several times in a couple different cars and eventually took it out.

I have the Ignitor 2 set up with the matching coil. My inital setup had no issues until I had the positive battery cable popped off and the coil unloaded through the module. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif Can you say fried bakealite??? No issues with my stuff, just have to treat it like a diesel with glowplugs. Turn the key and let the coil saturate before cranking!!!

I use a Mallory Unilite setup, never a problem. Will install the same on Benjamin's engine.

The Pertronix systems were unreliable in my experience. IMO the single-wire M&H ignition kit is the best retrofit kit on the market. For me, it's M&H or points, or MSD if I don't care what it looks like.

I have the Crane unit with a Pertronix coil. Crane has a built in rev limiter, all you need is a screw driver.

In my old '70 Camaro I used a GM HEI unit because the pertonix was said to be faulty. Never really needed more of an answer than that... never investigated either.

Does the crain unit have the total oe look that the pertronix does? If so,where can you get it, and what cars can I use it on. JOHN |

John- The Crane unit is just a module. Goes in your distributor to replace the points just like the Pertronix unit. The rev limiter is built right into it and has a pot to dial in. I got mine thru Jegs . Fits Chevy and Ford but not sure about Mopar...

I compared them and could not belive the torque diff and horsepower diff between the orig dist and the petronix. The petronix gave me 25 more hp and a lot more torque. I am away on vacation and and I dont have the stats with me or I would print them PJ |

What kinda shape was the points setup in?? |

Well...........It ended up that the Coil (Pertronix) was the problem.........Replaced it with a new unit and it started right up..........Had a couple of hundred miles on it so it was probably time to replace it anyway.......LOL

Like Sam and Rob, our L72 and L78 engines have run just fine with points. Our L78 car came with and HEI when I bought it and ran fine. When the HEI died, I installed a regular Delco points distributor. It's good enough for any rpm that our engines need to turn. A stock L72, L78, or LS6 probably doesn't have to turn more than 6K rpm for best quarter mile times anyway. I like to keep things simple.
