Vintage Stereo stuff

Rummaging through the garage earlier tonite looking for something else and this popped up.

My old reverb unit Mfgd. by Tenna Corporation.

http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m...y/DSCF0381.jpg

Also found this burried in another box. Anyone else ever seen an AR 8 track? I'm thinkin it might find its way back into a Chevelle.

Is that actual size? I knew those old stereo units were big but that looks like an F78x15.

I've still got the 8 track player for my Chevelle along with the box of tapes. I still have the AM radio cartridge that plugged into the tape player. Chromed 15" aftermarket rally wheels, Hurst shifter, Delco CD ignition kit. Original Uniroyal spare tire and SS wheel. Guess I should have said we. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif

One thing I haven't been able to find yet is my FM converter that slid into the tape deck. It had a plug for the car antenna to attach and although it seems unlikely, I think it picked up power somehow from the tape deck. (Maybe there was a battery in it. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif) Too many years have passed and I've raised too many mugs to all the folks here! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif

You must mean this unit: https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

It slides right in and pulls power from the tape deck itself through two metal tabs in the face plate. The wire on the side is actually an antennae that you drape over your visor or some lay on the dash. This one actually works reasonably well. I used it in my Chargers AM 8-track multiplex stereo. (which sounded like crap on it's own, but at least this gave it the capability for the FM to sound equally crappy, too.)

That's exactly the unit I had/have. Didn't recall it being an Audiovox but it may have been marketed under a different name. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

I had an adapter that fit over the end of my antenna coax to connect the car antenna to the converter. I found the cable but haven't run across the converter yet.

Thanks Steve! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Dennis I have a couple of NOS ones. PM your shipping info and I will send you one for free. I actually have a 8track converter that is CB radio also.

Regarding how they work, they simply get power from the contacts that are used to switch tracks and the end of the song ( metalic strip on the tape shorts the contacts which activated a track switching solenoid). It also used the tape head pickup to transmit the modulated FM signal.

Whoa...never knew those existed! I have a regular underdash fm converter, but this 8-track piece trumps it! I just recently picked up a brand new still in box Pioneer underdash 8-track player for my 'Sub, so this will solve my am only radio dilemma!

Off to Ebay... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

I kinda like this stuff too, Hmmmm..... wonder how it would sound in the Deuce? Can you put a reverb thingy on an AM Radio, and then plug in one of those FM 'verter thingys?

Where the heck would I find an 8 track tape - with some cool music????

BTW, I would want a 'Lear-Jet' brand stuff/junk, did they make something/anything?

Re: Vintage Stereo stuff

M: I've got a JC Penney converter that is a self contained unit...plug your antenna into the converter, then the lead from the converter goes to the am radio...if your current radio works, then this would work slick, and you could hide it if'n you want. My problem is, my am radio in my 'Sub quit, and they are a sonofagun to change in the '67-'72 trucks...so the 8-track w/plug in converter could band-aid it for me...

As for 8 tracks, folks around here just give 'em to me... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: Vintage Stereo stuff

Used to see a lot of Lear Jet 8 track stuff. Not sure they offered a reverb though. These things all work in conjunction but you'll need to have the reverb as the last unit downstream.

8 tracks? I got a ton of em. Some are still good. Just plugged in Cricklewood Green by Alvin Lee/Ten Years After' a couple of weeks ago while I was in the garage. Then I started smelling something like sweet grass burning so I popped it out and headed for the house! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/shocked.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smirk.gif

Steve,
Thanks a bunch for the offer but I'm reasonably sure I still have mine somewhere. Hang on to them, or make Rob/Marlin an 'Offer they can't refuse'. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/flag.gif

Years ago my inlaws were throwing out an 8track player/ recorder which I have now. Never used it but in "theory" I should be able to record current music on 8track tapes. I am not sure of the integrity of 8track tapes. The ones I own play like back in the day, horrible, but a shim here or there and the old tapes come alive.

They actually made home 8 track player/recorders. Plug in the old turntable, put the needle to your favorite 33 or 45 rpm record, BINGO.

Re: Vintage Stereo stuff

Yeah, I'm still working in that house and the 'Home Stereo Console' is still there and functional. I'll check it out tomorrow. I know the turntable still works and it MIGHT record 8 tracks! Wouldn't that be sumpthin? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/tongue.gif

Hey M; ya want a couple of 'Sly & the Family Stone' tapes? Or I could send you some from my Dad's collection. Choose from Slim Whitman, Ernest Tubb, Don Williams,.........Or an Andy Williams Christmas tape.https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...thumbsdown.gif

So that's what the antennae contraption is supposed to look like! I had to make my own by getting the correct connector at Radio Shack and adding a wire to it. (Bought the unit off ebay and it had no antennae wire at all.)

Never thought it had such an involved antennae splice-harness. Got any more of those NOS contraptions lieing around?

I've been trying to find an old AM/FM/Cassette radio for my Nova for months now with no luck. Two that I have bought would not fit (although the seller stated they would) and another did not work. I have already installed two small modern speakers in the dash waiting on sound to flow thru them. It has proved to be difficult to find a radio that has a shaft width of 6 - 1/4 inches.
