Has anyone seen casting numbers as crooked as these? |

Re: 70 Z28 Engine Block Casting Numbers
nope, those look pretty wild thats for sure,
I have seen plenty of parts/bits of the numbers missing from a bad/loose casting but all the ones I have looked are spaced even and in a nice row. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif |
Re: 70 Z28 Engine Block Casting Numbers

Re: 70 Z28 Engine Block Casting Numbers
Jeff please send me the picture. What is the casting number on your block?
Those numbers did not hit me right when I saw them. So what is this block? |
Re: 70 Z28 Engine Block Casting Numbers
Have you tried tapping the casting number with a small hammer?
I ran into a situation similar to yours, and found a homemade raised casting number epoxied over a flat surface. |
Re: 70 Z28 Engine Block Casting Numbers
Rick I was thinking of buying the car so I am just doing some leg work before I tap the numbers with a hammer.Good idea.

Re: 70 Z28 Engine Block Casting Numbers
Don't smack it with a hammer just yet - try a magnet!
|
Re: 70 Z28 Engine Block Casting Numbers
You don't have to smack it,just tap it firmly.
I actually cracked off an epoxied one that a magnet did stick to. Turns out the forger added fine metal shavings to the epoxy. |
Re: 70 Z28 Engine Block Casting Numbers
https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif Was probably easier to find the correct block vs. going through all the 'casting' work!

Re: 70 Z28 Engine Block Casting Numbers
As I recall the 3970010 casting # was used for a large variety of applications and years. Someone will need to check this but I think that casting # applied to 2 and 4 bolt mains and ranged from the late 60's thru the late 70's.

Re: 70 Z28 Engine Block Casting Numbers
Rick,
Not the best photo but here is what mine looks like. http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n...n_IMG_2269.jpg |
Re: 70 Z28 Engine Block Casting Numbers
The 010 block has many different applications in both 2 & 4 bolt configurations, and are fairly plentiful. I think the block started in '69, might be '68 - but I'm pretty sure it's '69+. The casting numbers are generally pretty straight, not sure I've ever seen them crooked like that.

Re: 70 Z28 Engine Block Casting Numbers

This is Jeffs (Owners2) 71 z28 block dated 01E. |
Re: 70 Z28 Engine Block Casting Numbers
I wouldnt worry aboiut that being a remake, its way too good including the underlying pad. Anyone with that talent wouldnt waste his efforts on a 100.00 010 block, and anyone with that talent wouldnt make the letters that far off yet perfect characters...im sure there are similar 010 blocks out there, but you need to find similar cast dated ranges not blocks made months before or after,of course they will be different.
