Cowl tag X55 or X66

From what I've read it would seem that a 69 camaro with a X55 cowl tag has a small block only and never a big block. I have a complete SS body, bought in late 70s that has a X55 tag but has a big block heater, heater core is dated one month before tag date, single fuel line, original big block frame mounts. Is it possible to have a X55 big block?

Most likley not. Unless the trim take is in error. Post a picture of the tag if you can, and the Vin#
Maybe Kurt or another CRG member can offer some other things to look at.
Do you have a POP for the car ?

Mike

I've never seen a tag that had the wrong X-code. They were computer generated from the ordering info.
I'd like to see a pic of the tag.

I had a 70`s firebird out of California that
had the original paperwork and wrong trim tag from the factory, the car was a survivor and had no reason to have ever been changed. I think we forget the human error factor in many things we look at as correct or normal. Every day I ask myself why my employees cant follow directions, or stick to the process we have mapped out??

Re: Cowl tag X55 or X66

Thanks for the responses. Back when I purchased this car I was not aware of 'X' codes meanings. I liked the car, a convertible, it had the obvious BB heater etc. and looked like an original SS, lots of options, even had a rear window defogger. As I am not the original owner, the car may have been altered as back then all we were interested in was speed and ET and originality was unimportant. I do not have any documentation. I will take a picture of the trim tag and post it. It may take some time as the car has been stored since the early 80s with lots of parts in front and around the main body.

Re: Cowl tag X55 or X66

It is probably more likely that some previous owner put a big block heater core and cover on it than it was a "human error" at the factory

Changed the core in the 70`s ?? I dont think so, but thats my 2cent.

Re: Cowl tag X55 or X66

I would like to see the clips holding the core in the housing, that would tell the story.

Hey Kurt, isn't there a documented X-11 Z-28 out there??? I thought I read that somewhere on the CRG or Team Camaro site???

check the X code on the trunk divider behind the back seat and see what it says. It sounds original enough for it to still be there

What's the inside measurement of the heaterbox opening where the heater core would be mounted? There's a difference between a BB, and a small block. Lotta folks will change the outside. Very few will change the inside. If the heater core is original Harrison, it should have a date code on it to correlate with the build date of the car.

You're right! There was an X11 Z28. Just one, so it can happen......

So if their is one than their are two, the car with the other trim tag that should be on the Z. I guess the 6cy X77 I have is REAL!!!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/laugh.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/laugh.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/laugh.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/laugh.gif

There was a guy with a L6 VIN that swore it was a Z. Drivetrain dates were all over the map (since nothing was original)!

Thanks for the comments, input. I have taken pics of the cowl tag and the vin tag but the images are too large and so not allowed to attach to my post. I have the heater box and heater core clips in on of many boxes and as yet have not found them.

Here's the pics.
Original tags for sure. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

Does it have the original axle? Do you have the axle code?

Finally realized that you are in Canada. Did you check with GM of Canada? If it was shipped new to Canada, they would have a record of the options for the car.
http://www.camaros.org/geninfo.shtml#MyCarHistory

Also, as someone suggested above, check for an X code on the rear bulkhead (trunk divider) behind the back seat.
