69 Nova paint question

A friend is getting ready to paint his Fathom Green Nova SS. The car has the lower rocker trim. His question were the rockers blacked out on this color? I know that certain Camaro colors did not recieve blackout. Did this also apply to Novas? Thanks in advance...BKH https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Re: 69 Nova paint question

If the Nova had the rocker trim (2 pieces) it would be blacked out. Here is the 69 brochure that shows it.

I don't believe the fathom green received the black-out treatment, just the lighter colors.

Darker colors like dusk blue, fathom green, black....did not get the black paint accent. Look at the photos of BBB's 69 for reference.

Thanks marlin https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif. Not that anyone would start laying paint after something I blurted out, but.... Thats what I thought...I didn't think it got it. The Garnet red one we are doing had it. But I didn't think the dark color would..BKH

Re: 69 Nova paint question

I think you can use the same rule of thumb with Novas as X66 camaros. The black simply doesn't show up well enough on some of the darker colors to warrent it.

I've seen some Novas that had the black out without the lower rocker chrome, although the most common is with the double chrome. I sometimes think they used the same logic with this as the rocker curtains on 68s. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

None of the Nova brochures 68-70 mentioned the "RAT"....you had to know to ask for it. There were occasional factory print ads that mentioned the BB, but not very many...it was also a topic of several magazine test drive articles...eg; "13 second grocery getter"...lack of up front marketing really added to the sleeper reputation of these cars https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

Less appeal, less marketing made them #3 behind Chevies big 2. Should of had Tommy doing their marketing in those days! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif

Re: 69 Nova paint question

After thinking on this a little more, I would think that if on a 69, the inner door frames were blacked out, it would get the blacked out rockers with the lower trim. I'm not sure how, or what triggers the lower black without the lower chrome.

That would also be consistant with the 69 Camaro

Re: 69 Nova paint question

I think the inner door frame blackout that you reference is not technically 'black-out' treatment. I believe the inner door frames on the '69 Novas were actually just painted to match the interior color. So, if you had a black interior, then it would be black-out, but if you had a blue interior on a white Nova then the inner door frames would be blue.

Clear as mud? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif

Marlin, that is how my 69 is. The only thing that I didn't research yet is I think my 69 had the lower rocker moldings only and it was blacked out above. The car had been repainted but under the sill plate it's black. It also has the B 2 code? I think you had metioned that that was a code for the exterior options? It has the chrome around the windows and the rear panel molding and the rocker moldings. Plus, it has a white painted top and glacier blue bottom. The rocker moldings are taken off in this picture.

You are probably right about the door frames. Funny how they seemed to address that color issue, but always blew body color on the outside of the dash area.

Re: 69 Nova paint question

Jed,

I believe that the '2' on your TT indicates that the car received 2 of the 3 exterior molding options: drip rail, door frame or body side. Your car supports that theory since it has drip rail and door frame.

Since your car has the rocker molding and rear non-SS panel, it apparently has the ZJ2 option of Custom Exterior. This option was not included in the code on the TT, it's a mystery as to why. The rocker area behind the rear wheel should also be painted black with a double row of moldings.

Neat car!

Looking at the brochure I had no idea that the 69 Nova and Nova's in general could get headlight washers!! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...emlins/eek.gif Have cars been documented with headlight washers?

Re: 69 Nova paint question

No, it was canceled before it ever hit production. We believe some of the headlight frames were drilled for the washer nozels, one NOS set has been found, but no cars have been found with them.

Re: 69 Nova paint question

This car supports that same theory!!!!!With 3 trim options.
You can see that in the repaint the mouldings were present.

Re: 69 Nova paint question

My Nova did have the rocker moldings and I know the quarters have been replaced. That's why the quarter moldings are not there.
