Impala-Thon in Philly
[b]Always being a lover of the big cars and having owned several 409 cars, I had to come get a preview
of the items for this auction. Joe Robinson was kind enough to give me a sneak peek at all the things which will be sold the end of this month. The paperwork from the auction company shows that this is a bankruptcy sale. Only the ‘31 Auburn street rod is from a bankruptcy, all the rest belong to Joe, and are his personal property. He owns an old dairy building that all these cars had been stored in. Because he is selling this property he has lost his storage. This is the only reason he is disposing all of this. Joe has been involved in the automobile industry his whole life, at one time owning a chain of engine replacement shops. This is where he acquired a lot of the engines and parts he is selling. They are putting the parts with the cars they belong to, trying to make them as complete as possible. Many of the cars were vandalized by kids while in storage. It is a shame the condition of some of them, as they were saved by Joe because they were special. Joe’s a car guy and kept these because he liked them. He can give you the back story on every car, when he bought it, where it came from, what it originally was and what was done to it. I sure he could make more money breaking it all down and e-baying much of it, but talking to Joe you can see he would like to see many of them put back together. As we looked at the cars he’d say, "I’d take this body and mate it with these SS flor pans, this engine and you’d have a nice car" - - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...hon/Imp001.jpg - - These are some of the parts they are breaking down to match to the donor cars. - - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...hon/Imp002.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...on/Imp002a.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...on/Imp002b.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...on/Imp002d.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...on/Imp002f.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...on/Imp002g.jpg - |

Re: Impala-Thon in Philly
Dog,
I have been following this auction from the beginning. I commend you for making the trip early to see it all. MANY more photos of cars and parts than on the web site. And you must have been lucky to find Joe there. I will be there on the Fri "official" preview day. I will attempt to document as many cars as I can and also look for a few parts I need. The auction company states that none of the cars have titles, so I fear they will sell as parts cars. Even if there are a few original '09 cars there, I wonder who would risk trying to title one to restore it. It will be interesting to see if any of the VINs on the engines match the VINs on the cars. That will be one of my quests on Friday. It's a shame everything is in such bad shape. Verne https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/frown.gif |
Re: Impala-Thon in Philly
I Remember JA Robinson way back from the 70s used to have a Engine replacement shop near K&A not surprised
that none of the cars have titles what a shame |
Re: Impala-Thon in Philly
You can just register with a bill of sale on pre-title cars (Pre-'73/'74)..right? or are they specifying "no paperwork"?
|
Re: Impala-Thon in Philly
The auction company now has the cars & parts listed on ebay and is taking "pre-auction" bids that will supposedly be reported at the time of the physical auction. They also have everything listed on another live auction web site, both requiring a 20% buyers premium. And he has set reserves on all the items and given the owner the right to place his own bids up to the reserves. So, if you're planning on attending, just imagine standing there out in the cold with your bidders paddle while the auctioneer is busy refreshing his laptops and informing you that you have been out-bid! No chance for hanky-panky I'm sure.... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif

Re: Impala-Thon in Philly
I went to the motors first and checked every one, including the misc bare blocks. 1/2 of them were low perf 348s and a lot of those were truck. OF the 409s, only 3 were not truck. There was a '64 340hp, a '65 340hp and a '62 409hp (original deck with a St.Louis VIN.).......(no Z-11 codes there)
The motor in the 6cyl '61 "409 car" was a QA block with a Tarrytown VIN. IT had an X on the front so it was either a '63 or '64 400hp (couldn't see the casting number on the back). Most of the loose parts were pretty junky (IMO), but I paid no attention to the small block stuff. Most of the "good" cars inside were very worn out originals or had missing or changed parts on them, although most had very solid bodies. Clearly the best car there was the Azure Agua '64 SS Sport Coupe. It had it's born with 409/340 and a 4-spd with an unmolested deck and the Tarrytown VIN on it. It was a very uniquely optioned car. It had P/S & P/B but no tinted glass, 1-spd wipers and no radio (originally). There is an aftermarket radio in the dash now and someone cut a hole in the quarter for an antenna. It had a poor quality repaint, the white interior was dingy and worn. The car basically needs it all to make it nice again, but the kicker is it's an original transistorized ignition car! Those cars are exceedingly rare and I've never documented one like this one. All the original engine equipment is there (not even missing the little stuff). It had the correct shifter and tach. And yes, even the original ignition amplifier was there. I was able to get all the inside cars documented, but there was a 30mph wind across the parking lot and I couldn't hold up to it to doc the junk cars out there. Re: Impala-Thon in Philly
Some photos of that rare '64:
Here's the deck pad. Surprisingly, I didn't get to this car until after 1:30 and I was the first one to clean off the deck to check numbers! Unbelievable! To most who are used to looking at small blocks or MK-IVs, this might look hooky, but I assure you, it IS genuine. http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...eckpadQQsm.jpg Some original engine details. http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...lterclipsm.jpg The original Rochester 4-Jet. A very tough carb to find. It's known as the low silouette style (notice the short bowl). http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...och340hpsm.jpg Original air cleaner http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...rcleanersm.jpg This gives me tingles......and I'm not even holding onto the wires! http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...istorampsm.jpg Sorry for posting so late since the auction starts in less than 12hrs, but I just wanted to share. Verne https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif |
Re: Impala-Thon in Philly
I have about the same to say about it as you Verne. Not a lot of stuff, but I was glad there were at least a few passenger 409s. It was very interesting to see a QQ suffix in that 64! Also, after taking down the numbers from the 65 409 block, I discovered one of the two Muncies in the transmission section had a matching vin to the 409, but they were in separate lots and will probably be split up tomorrow.. I was able to get the numbers off most of the cars outside, nothing very interesting. The only code that caught my attention was 2Q on the black 63 409 Impala.
