Re: Ahh the good ol' days...
that is sweet, I have been looking for the bike I had as a kid but no luck yet. remember the bikes that were named CHOPPER.
Ralph Nader even had his hands in saying those style bikes were UNSAFE. I will try and dig that article up. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkPFOsNWEH0 |

Yes I do...here's me and my brand new Raleigh Chopper back in 1970. And here it is now. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif I never could figure out how to do a wheelie without crashing, though.

Re: Ahh the good ol' days...
I don't recall what make it was, but I remember a buddy having a similar bike with a redline rear tire. It did "sweet jumps!" My bike had a flake banana seat and I could do "catwalks" all the way down the street. We'd go through 2 or 3 rear tires in a summer..

With 4 boys and one girl in the family, all I ever got were hand-me down bikes. I actually learned how to ride on this one. You can see the seat is in the lowest position but my feet are still about 6 inches from the ground. I wasnt too good at balancing that thing. Oh and the shoes? I had a habit of dragging the toes and scuffing my shoes whenever I was in a huff and didn't get my way. It didn't work too well on my parents and all it ever did was make my shoes leaky in the rain. Humbug! |
Re: Ahh the good ol' days...
Wow great stuff!.
Love the old bikes too and still have a 40's Columbia Tankhorn also a few old trikes.. Cool Whizzer Ken!. I had one too but sold it a dozen years or so back...I'll dig up a few pics.. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ouguysrock.gif ~ Pete |
Re: Ahh the good ol' days...
Remember some of the accessories back then? I was a kid in the early-mid 70's. I had a speedometer, turn signals, one of those huge orange flags, a headlight with those generators that run off the front tire and Star Wars cards in the spokes for that motorbike sound. My privileged friend had one of those motorcycle grips that made a revving sound when you twisted it and a "CB Radio" that mounted in the center of the handlebars. It was really a walkie talkie.

Re: Ahh the good ol' days...
Nearly every kid on our block had one of these by 1968. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif

Re: Ahh the good ol' days...
My parents bought me a Ward's Hawthorne (Stingray copy-cat) for my b-day in about 1970 and it weighed a ton. A few years later it was stolen from the bike rack at Ward's and the replacement was a Schwinn Scrambler and that bike was excellent--light and very "wheelieable."

Re: Ahh the good ol' days...
I'm a few years older, or more, then you guys and we didn't have the StingRays, or Choppers when I was a kid.
But I did have this cool attachment that slid over the handlebar end and screwed down. It worked like a motorcycle throttle and when you cranked it a loud engine roar would erupt from it. Very hi-tech for the time! - - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...hotos/1006.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...hotos/1003.jpg - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...hotos/1001.jpg - |

Re: Ahh the good ol' days...
We forget sometimes I think just how big the car culture was in the 60's and how it extended to everything. Those bikes are so cool.
|
Re: Ahh the good ol' days...
Hmmmm...I don't think we had those up here??? I remember, using another set of front forks to extend our bike forks like a chopper, those colored straw things for the spokes, hockey cards between the spokes with a clothes peg to generate some noise, banana seats and sissy bars, sparkly red hand grips...those were the days https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/smile.gif

Re: Ahh the good ol' days...
What are the decals on the car Dog?
One looks like "Nascar"... |
Re: Ahh the good ol' days...
Good eye - that is a '58 ford.
The decals are, a Daytona International Speedway decal, a NASCAR decal similar to this - but not a race winner decal - - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...hotos/win7.jpg - - And the last is a decal from Darlington - - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...hotos/nas3.jpg - |
