How would you touch-up this survivor's paint?
 

This is the original tahoe turquoise paint on a very nice original 67 Camaro SS/RS. Can anyone suggest a good way to touch-up this car's hood and trunk lid in order to preserve the originality of the car? It might be best to leave it as is, but will it deteriorate further through careful washing and driving?

On another note... just how much can a car be touched-up before it looses that "survivor" status?

I would paint another hood and store that one away.

I would leave it alone, just keep a nice coat of wax on it.

Our '67 had been very well taken care of so the paint was in nice shape. A lady ran her wheel chair up the fender leaving a six inch scrape. When the bodyshop got done, it would take a trained eye to see where the repair was done. The right guy can do wonders. However, there does come a time when a repaint is the only answer.

I would see if your painter could color match and panel paint the hood and deck. If not you would have to blend in the tops of the fenders and quarters with the hood and decklid. There are a few shops around here that I have seen this done and when done properly you would be hard pressed to tell anything was done.

I know some people say they are only original once but you need to preserve them to protect them from further deterioration. Even the greatest works of art are touched up and preserved so why not our cars?

No good way to touch that up gently. You should probably think about reshooting it if you want it to look better. Wax will help preserve it, but it won't help the looks.

If you pick the right shop they should be able to shoot the hood & have it to were you can't tell. I would shoot another hood & save that original paint hood.

I was also thinking about doing the same thing with the nova I just bought. Top of fenders, complete hood and cowl area. I would just wax it & leave it alone.
It's not 1/10th as bad as some other original paint cars.
I think it adds character and validity to your claim as well.

HI if you can find laquer paint RM is the factory paint and do not polish it even that is a camble

Here is a better shot of it. The original vinyl top was tattered and removed by a previous owner, so its getting a new one.

Your Camaro was registered not too long after my brothers 67! The car was originally purchased at a dealership in Compton, CA. I believe the car was first sold 07/26/1967 and the first registration was 08/24/67

Helmut,
I know it's hard to tell with photos, but it looks like your wheels are Tripoli Turquoise but the body is some shade of blue! Are you sure it didn't receive an overcoat of blue in its past? Or do those wheels have fresh paint?

The wheels were powdercoated by the previous owner, and that was the closest shade he could get to the original paint.

I appreciate survivors as much as anyone, but they get lost when parked next to correctly restored cars. Every car that I have seen that has been advertised as a survivor has been fluffed, blown in or touched up. Bloomington survivor standards even allow for some fluff.

My Boss 351 was an original paint car that was well preserved with no issues except one small spot that you could see under flourescent lights. If my cars paint was worn through or it had surface rust, I would repaint the car and preserve the rest no matter if it was original paint or not.

I couldn't disagree more! I'd walk across the hood of restored car to get a better look at a car like this one.

A good friend of mine has an original paint 69 pace car and a 40,000 mile original paint 1968 SS-RS 4 speed camaro in that same color blue. Both cars are very nice with NO blow-ins. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/cool.gif

Marlin I agree with you whole heartedly when the car is like Lvcamaro's Copo that he just sold. When they are preserved and untouched like that they should never be touched. And you are correct I would rather look at a car preserved like that Copo or Jack Seymour's Orange 70 Z-28 rather then a restored one as well. Cars like that are truly special.

My opinion is only for survivor type cars that have paint that can't hold a shine, have extreme checking, or the paint is so thin you can see sheet metal underneath because they have not been stored or cared for properly when put away and forgotten.
