my 67 Z racecar finally saw light of day today
1 Attachment(s)
I bought 2 new lifts...so I can downsize??? my car collection. So I had a bunch of cars outside my garage today trying to re-organize. What a workout with a bunch of push-mobiles...
Anyway..I had posted some real dark pics of this car a while back and I thought I'd post some better ones that I took today...I'm still interested in any old photos or records from back in the day ...the car was bought new from Hubler Chev. in Indianapolis by a mechanic that worked there...It was raced from day one...The car arrived at the dealer friday..was purchased on Monday and was at the track the next Friday....its never been registered or street driven. Early on in 1/4 mile all around local midwest area..then parked until mid 70's and raced 1/8th mile. I believe with a big block...And then parked for good for all these years...originally red w/white stripes..and called "chantilly lace" because it had a lace paint scheme over the stripes...has been painted numerous times since ..all by original owner himself...and eventually has morphed into this metalflaked..muraled...racer...hehehe hope the pics turn out... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif |

Thanks guys for the comments...and thanks a million for the great sight also!!!
My plans are definitely to keep it a day two type car...I'd like to build a 302 similar to what was run back in the day..and paint the car back to original red and white...the lace?? Don't know if I could do all that...Maybe if I saw a pic of the car from back then...supposedly also had a white laced area on the quarter panel pillar soon after it was new...the owner also engraved the windows with scenes from the countryside...and his name also...he was a real artist..(or maybe just did too much acid...just kiddin')the original owner was always 'supposed to get me pics' of the car racing...but he is kinda of a hippie type and real hard to pin down. He did give me a bunch of time slips from the area dragstrips...I'd sure like to hear from anyone that might remember the car.... I will post some more pics of some of the details of the car that are still intact...like the T-3's...the original riveted door sills..the original radiator.. much of the original red paint is visible in certain areas...also will post some of the 'owner-modified' racing features...like the radiator clamp emergency gas pedal return...or the "roll bar and Dana 60 installation that the original owner installed after he recieved "top-secret" docs from Chrysler Corp. on how to set up a hemi-cuda" ...or the vega gas tank with the fill inside the trunk..."so noone would sabatoge his gas at the track"....hehehe ....if only this car could talk...I imagine it ran in the shadows of some of the big boys back in the days...but probably saw alot of cool stuff!!! I'll post some pics later tonite...gotta get to work!! Anyone remember the car??? Thanks again!! |

Where exactly was Hubler Chev back in '67?

hey mockingbird....my dad used to sing that song all the time to my mom and us kids when we were growing up...That's the first thing I thought of when I heard the car's racing name...I always wanted to do a lace paintjob on a car...I fooled around with it when I worked in a body shop back in my high school days...I'm not sure how to do it...I'd have to practice up first......
I'm just not sure I want to put lace on this car!!! But maybe!! I had a 69 Z that had a cobweb type paint on the white stripes...it looked pretty cool... ..Anyone got a any pics of a lace type paint scheme that's not too far over the top?? |

Thanks Doggg...I believe my car had a painted white part similar to the super hugger photo...I still dont know about the lace??? All these cars are rather over the top for me..
One good thing is I can always add it once it is painted...but,thats probably a ways off yet..although the body is vertually dent and rust free, except where all the lacquer paint is peeling off the car, but thats just very minor surface rust..the only dent I could even find was in the left front fender above the sticker in an earlier photo...it ia the size of a quarter...the quarter lips have been massaged?? though..that may be an issue... Also, I was under the impression that the service replacement door sills don't have the little rivets holding the fisher emblem?? and that they are not available for years...correct me if I am wrong...I am certainly no expert on these cars..I appreciate any input if i'm not correct on the facts.. Heres some more pics... I hope you can see the metalflake...its everywhere...even un the engine compartment!!! Thanks again!! |

heres the pedals..notice the rad clamp gas pedal safety...and the block of wood under the clutch..the owner said that everyone was blowing clutches because the clutch was engaging too far..(or something like that)...and this fixed the problem...also notice the tunnel...looks like a few driveshafts whacked it once or twice!!!

Re: my 67 Z racecar finally saw light of day today
Interesting - that decklid appears to have the correct 1967 emblems on it and no spoiler in the first picture, but in the picture of the underside it appears to have more holes in the underframe than I have seen on 1967 decklids, enough to allow for installatio of a spoiler. Can you tell if the decklid may have been swapped for another car at some time? Are there date codes stamped into it?

I'm not familiar with thier location, but I'll check...I have a pic of the decklid thats a bit closer...you now have me curious...I have 2 other 67 camaros..how would i tell the difference?? i do remember something about the holes for the spoiler on the later cars...the problem is, at this point, who really knows whats original on my cars...it is rather curious to me that the spoiler on this car underneath is bolero red...although i guess it could have been changed early on..and painted to match the car in it's original paint..I would not doubt anything with this car.Although it has real low miles(a quarter maile at a time)...the i suspect the original owner changed everything and anything if he could get a slight advantage...it was a real experience sitting down with him for a few hours one night for dinner and listening to him just reminiscing"...what an encyclopedia of drag racing memories and 'secrets'...(maybe just 'his secrets') for example, the car now has manual drum brakes..which I assume was fairly common in order to go faster due to the drag on the discs...he says he gained .4 seconds from that alone...a change that he made almost right away... anyway here's another pic of the trunklid...and a few more pics of the car... |

The date stamp for the decklid would be where I placed a circle. It might be hard to see if there is a lot of paint. Neat car and would look cool in Day 2 trim. Re: my 67 Z racecar finally saw light of day today
Could this car have been sold at Nankivell Chev. - which is now Hubler? The dealership is on Rt 31 South, between Indy and Greenwood.
Cool car, love the 'shadetree' efforts from the original owner! |
Re: my 67 Z racecar finally saw light of day today
Hey guys, thanks for all the nice comments.I hope I can find time...(and space) to redo the car...sooner than later!!!! Unfortunately, I really need to downsize my life early next year and this may be one of the cars that needs to go.Sure hope I can figure a way to hold on to her...and get her going again.........
Anyway, about the 69z w/the cobwebbing...upon speaking to my younger brother, he insists it had lace..actually paisley lace...he is very adamant and specific...I guess my alzheimer's is kicking in...I trust his memory better than mine..It was a fathom green Z that I purchased in about 94??...it had been sitting in a barn since 1975 near Trenton Nj...right in front of Mercer County Comm. College(for you local guys)...The owner was on a submarine in the navy and his dad actually sold me the car...I was working at the house next door and saw the car outside behind the rear fence in a foot of snow...the car had only been removed from the barn less than one month prior. After buying the car, we actually returned to the barn and went in the attic to get the original flat hood and the console with guages. The car had the paisley on the white stripes and also had thin white paisley on the sides of the cowl induction scoop. The car had green deluxe interior I believe also...The car was all original less the aftermarket shifter, scattershield, and 492 heads...the intake and carb were stolen from the car while it was in the barn. The car had tow tabs and free wheeling hubs too...must've had a trip or two down the strip in its life.I got that car for 3500 bucks. At the time totally done Z's were only max $20,000 absolutely mint, but it was still a great deal....If i could only find a few like that again!!! That was one that got away as I sold it in a package deal a year or two later along with 2 other 69 Z's and 4 other cars and a bunch of parts...I think the price of Z's skyrocketed the following day!!! I got a great deal on the car, but I suspect the guy i sold it to made more on it than me!!! Hey Mark, i thought you might chime in on this one...Thanks for the info on the lid... And Mark..thanks also...I'll check the date today!! Thanks again for all the positive feedback.....Max And thanks for the info on the trunklid date...I'll take a look today and see..although it does seem odd that it is different than the trunklid on the car in the other post here on this site...any reason why?? Mine seems to have more holes?? Thanks again to you experts!!! |
Re: my 67 Z racecar finally saw light of day today
Hey Rick...thank you for the info. on the date!!!
|
Re: my 67 Z racecar finally saw light of day today
No problem Max...that is a great car and I would do it in it's drag car past. I know of a Tahoe RS Z that was a drag car from day one and if I ever bought it, that is exactly how I would leave it.
Your lid has the correct number of holes for a late '67 lid. They changed throughout the model year...I would be money that your lid is original. |
