The top would be chrome if it had chrome valve covers. If it had painted covers the lid was black. At least this was my understanding on this. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Nope. Unless I am wrong (which happens more than I like:) )All LM1's had painted covers and got the chrome lid anyway. Same with the SS.
