Need opinion on redline tires
I just bought a near mint example of a Canadian only offered 69 Pontiac Laruentian. While it is not a supercar or really a musclecar (just has a 250hp Chevy 350-Canadian Pontiacs were built on Chevy chassis) I do want to jazz it up with a set of redline tires. At first I was going to buy radial redlines, but I still love the look of bias ply's. I'm looking for opinions on both. The car will see limited driving-no more than say 1000 miles a year and likely only on nice days. How well do repro bias plys hold up? I've heard some horror stories about the repro's having a short tread life. Also, I'm going to run the correct 15" rally wheels that were offered here. They are the same rim as Monte Carlo/Corvette rallys but have a small button cap instead of the Chevy center. What size in a radial and in bias ply should I run? As mentioned earlier, these Pontiac were built on Impala chassis.
Thanks. Oh-heres a couple of pics. The car was stripped completely to bare steel in 1978 and repainted in lacquer its original color of Mayfair Maize. The paint has held up quite well. http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...aurentian3.jpg http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...aurentian2.jpg Thanks Todd |
Re: Need opinion on redline tires
Unfortunatly Todd I think your better off with radials....I dont think you will find a big enough Bias ply for it because I think a g-70 is the biggest you can buy. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/beers.gif

Re: Need opinion on redline tires
While I'm not a fan of radials... Diamondback,I feel has the best looking tires. No name on the sidewall and none of those stupid looking cords/ribs running from the rim to the tread.I'd stick with a bias redline. They just look right! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Re: Need opinion on redline tires
If you are going to "Drive" the car then put the Radials on.........Look at the tread profiles for a good looking one as Diamond Back has some "Clubby" treadpatterns that look like they belong on 4 Wheelers......
I would stay away from Coker Ken |
Re: Need opinion on redline tires
Anybody have any experience with Vintage Tires in PA.? I think they do redlines with BFG Radial T/A's.?

Re: Need opinion on redline tires
A G-70 would be plenty big...Maybe even too big...that's the size my 69 Elky had on it. What was the factory size for the car? Definitely put bias plys on it...no question. Radial redlines won't look any better than the radial whitewalls you have on it now.

Re: Need opinion on redline tires
I regognize that one, come from the Welland area? On my '69 2+2 I ran the largest Redlines Coker had in the Radial to fill the fenders. If I did it again I'd drop a size. The rims should be 15x6.I guess you didn't want to buy the 427 one Eh?

Re: Need opinion on redline tires
No, this one fit the budget with room to play. I'd like to fill the engine bay with a 427 to match those fender emblems that were put on the car in '78! The owners manual shows 8.25 X 15 and optional G70X15 or G78X15. Can someone explain the "G" sizing?
Thanks for the info. Astrojet-did you own that green 2+2 with the redlines that is shown in a pic outside a diner? I loved that car! Todd |
