Re: '68 Camaro A/MP race car
Wow, Fascinating stuff! And yet another issue of CARS I have yet to find! I'd love to know what happened to it also, as it seems like such a high profile car would have been saved. Here are two more pictures of that car, one from an ad, and one from the title page of an article about it by Joel. I will try to locate the rest of the pages of the article.

Cool camaro as well as many of the cars in the background of the pics.

Re: '68 Camaro A/MP race car
I re-call a 68 camaro looking just like that, lettering & all in white for sale from a private collector in florida about 7-8 years ago in hemmings for about maybe 30,000 or 40,000.I will see if i still have that old hemming.Jeff

it was like that every friday night :burnout [/ QUOTE ] I miss Friday night back in the day (1976-84 for me). Then, where I was in NorCal, cruising died/got killed-off in '85. Now I live for our local show season when I can cruise into the fairgrounds (or wherever) and kinda' get that same feeling we used to get as kids when we arrived at whatever Main we were cruising that night. |

Boys I never have bought that picture of a 68 pulling the wheels on the street back then and still don't today. I just don't buy it. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bs.gif

Re: '68 Camaro A/MP race car
Look at all the pictures of that car racing at a track. Do you see the wheels off the ground in any of those pictures?? No there not, so how did it do it on the street with less traction?? https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif
|
Re: '68 Camaro A/MP race car
That picture shows it smoking the back tires and pulling the fronts off the ground come on. They may jumped on several times and the wheels came the ground but standing still and pulling the wheels I can't buy it.
|
Re: '68 Camaro A/MP race car
Maybe a 67 camaro wouldn't pull the front tires on the street, but a guy I worked with had a 69 Chevelle 396/375 with 10 1/2" slicks that would pull the front tires 8" on the street, in a drive-in restaurant parking lot or the drive way at the gas station. Just amazed everyone at the time. He did have 5.38 rear gears though..... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif
|
Re: '68 Camaro A/MP race car
I know what you are saying Kim but those back tires look planted pretty good. In the old days the drag strips did not have concrete starting pads but the highways did! Smoke may be from the right side header https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif but you may be right. Trick photography? NAH, not in those days.https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/3gears.gif

Re: '68 Camaro A/MP race car
the street in front of the shop was asphalt not concrete.
VW's would regularly get air in that spot. The photo does NOT look touched, the shadows would not be that good. JMHO ( I believe in Joey's floating HEMI ) https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif |

Not only is that car yanking the tires up on the street.. I'll bet it did it quite easily.. And to me that "smoke" looks more like dust off the ground being stirred up from the open headers at wide open throttle.. but thats just my opinion.... https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/burnout.gif |
Re: '68 Camaro A/MP race car
The "smoke" is located in front of the tire. and only on the passenger side. So unless the car is in reverse doing a peg leg burn out...it's dust from the ground or from the right header.

Re: '68 Camaro A/MP race car
I always loved that shot too...the '68 Goat this side of the '64 Poncho is braking to turn around and join the fun?.
Anyway, is it even the same car for sure?. Although both are lettered and have the dash-tach, the street shot shows a stock hood also look at the leading edge of the roof...is that just shadows or a vinyl top?. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...lins/dunno.gif ~ Pete |
Re: '68 Camaro A/MP race car
I did ask Joel about it at the reunion several years ago. I asked if they used bottle jacks . Didn't get an answer.
|
Re: '68 Camaro A/MP race car
I agree Pete. I'm not sure if that is the same car. Hey I love that picture I still have the mag. it was in. I think it's one of the best shots taken back then. I just feel the car didn't do that from a standing start.
|
Re: '68 Camaro A/MP race car
I had M/T cheater slicks on my '68 Ram Air Firebird for a short time. The car had pretty well everything done to it and still be "stock". I couldn't make those slicks hook up no matter what I did and the car certainly wasn't making A/MP horsepower. Getting on and off the gas in low could get the wheels up a bit, (so a friend told me). I tend to agree with Kim. There were a lot of smoke and mirrors magazine articles back then. Remember the GTO Ferrari comparison where the GTO blew the Ferrari away. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif I'll have to get into the attic and drag out all the old magazines that I have stashed away. You tend to forget all the good old stuff in them. I've always taken magazine articles as entertainment and nothing more. Works for me.

Oh wait ..thats right.. it's Impossible for a car to pull the wheels on the "Street" without bottle jacks under it... Come on.. http://youtube.com/watch?v=oyrXtkFIagY |

Re: '68 Camaro A/MP race car
Here is the definitive answer to that question - direct from Marty!
- http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...20Chevy/6a.jpg - - Hi Glen: I hope this settles the nonsense I've seen around this photo. Since I took the photo I know it's real. He made just a couple of passes and I nailed the shot. Somehow the shot on the Yenko website and what you have sent looks as though it may have been retouched. I'm not sure if there was that much daylight under the wheels when I took it. However, the wheels were up. It's the real deal. It was shot during actual dyno testing, not so I could get a shot pulling the wheels. It was shot on a Saturday and the car was being readied for the track on Sunday. Hope this helps, Marty |
Re: '68 Camaro A/MP race car
If you look under the car you can see what appears to be a header collector and distortion in the picture which is probably heat/smoke
|
Re: '68 Camaro A/MP race car
Ed, cars today pull the front end all the time but 1967 we didn't have the tires, tranny brakes or traction we have today period.
My Gibb Nova would pull the wheels on the street. 5:67 gears floater read end & 14x32 goodyears. Very easy to today but not back then. |

https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/scholar.gif VW's stock forty HP easily modified with over the counter parts from Motion (minicar) to 100hp would easily get 4inches of air on both sides with pro trac 60's on a stock rear. BTDT |
Re: '68 Camaro A/MP race car
Glenn ask him if this is the A/MP car?

Re: '68 Camaro A/MP race car
Kim
Same car - If you look closely you can see the lettering on the pass fender. Those other shots with the Motion hood were taken at a later time. |
Re: '68 Camaro A/MP race car
Glenn you didn't have that lic plate on 69 camaro and race Englishtown in the 90's
