69 COPO or?
[b] Found this '69 427 article in Dec.'83 Classic Sixties magazine.
The story never really states if its real. Is it, and where is it today? - - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...hevy/ss148.jpg - |

Re: 69 COPO or?
Why would someone clone one back in 83? And especially look that correct under the hood!
|
Re: 69 COPO or?
Seems to me that I recall this being a real COPO. Not much faking going on back then because they prices weren't through the roof. Besides, most people didn't even know what a COPO was back then. Up until about 5 years ago, people were still arguing about what COPO meant. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/wink.gif

Re: 69 COPO or?
I remeber seeing that name Jay Nixon before in the magazines back then. I think he may have had a very nice black 1969 Chevelle as well.
I also think it may have been before the clone builders got involved so I would bet that this car was real. |
Re: 69 COPO or?
Jay was very prominent with the NCOA & Mark Meekins back then.

Re: 69 COPO or?
-------Thats a name Id forgotten, but a very nice guy. It seems to me that Jay had a burnished brown 69 COPO Chevelle quite a ways back. I do remember it being a very unusual Velle. Maybe an L89??? I know it was brown as we were parked a couple of cars apart at an outside show.........Bill S

Re: 69 COPO or?
Jay is now in Socal and doing fine. Most parts places know him well because he owns "Details". He was probably the first guy selling the front end bolt kits etc to all the dealers. The red red 69 Z28 I had used to be Jay's. One of the good guys.

Re: 69 COPO or?
The Nixon car was at SC-Indy 1984 or so-I always take notes:
124379N640330 NOR 292815 711 72 72 05A X44 - was not black originally. It was there with another COPO owned by Sam Pierce: 124379N643841 NOR 292800 711 72 B 05A X11 The latter COPO was from Bob McDorman Chev in Ohio. |
Re: 69 COPO or?
Boy, that brings back memories. I remember seeing that car in "Super Chevy" and "Classic Sixties". It's picture is still on the Details paint cans. I always heard Jay sold the car because it was an original orange car they had painted black. As the restorations got more accurate he sold the car because of the color change. The car was one of the first restored copo's out there. I see on his website he'd like to have it back. I've got Jay's brake lines on my car...he was the first to do them as well as used other parts from him and his paints. Also have Al Colvin's chambered exhaust. I always wondered what happened to Jay after he sold his stuff to Brian Caudell, (another MIA). I guess he took it back over after moving to Ca. I didn't know he was still involved...another guy from "back in the day". That was a really neat time in the hobby.

"That was a really neat time in the hobby."
That's for sure. I would spend 3 days at SC-Indy and still not see everything. Todays' Super Chevy shows are nothing like they were in the '80s. |

[/ QUOTE ] That's for sure - you don't get the turnout you had 20 years ago This is Maple grove in '84 - when is the last time it looked like this?? - - http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t...hevy/ss149.jpg |
Re: 69 COPO or?
Our business used to vend at SC-Indy; we also did SC-Maple Grove '83 or '84. Grumpy Jenkins was there to do a pass in his former '63 Z-11 Impala. He was just walking around afterwards and people just hounded him. He came over to our spot and sat out of sight on the back bumper of our van for a few minutes. I remember on the loooong ride to PA we passed a junkyard with a '67 Camaro sitting along the back fence so we stopped. It had been rolled and there wasn't much left but I thought it odd that it had power front discs. So I grabbed the the 04L tag; still have it.
The picture accurately depicts how it was; Indy was the same. You simply could not see it all in 3 days. I went to SC-Joliet last August and it was pitiful. |
Re: 69 COPO or?
I remember going to SC at Maple Grove in the 80's. It was packed! That picture is how I remember it. I haven't been to SC at the Grove in at least 10 years now.

Re: 69 COPO or?
yeah, Indy SC was the highlight of the year. I remember Rusty Symms' ZL1 being there. You had to take a number and stand in line to look at it. 409's racing everywhere, was there one year with the car on the concourse... hotter than he**, but it was the place to be. The year all the Zl1's were featured was cool too. Haven't been to a SC in several years. Last one was in Columbus a few years ago, probably spent maybe a hour there then headed to McDorman's show going on at the same time. It's a shame the SC's went away and we don't have anything on the level of the Mopar Nat's but then again last time I was there it looked like it was down too. It seemed like when Gustin took over the SC's the emphasis was on being a bracket race and it started sinking like a rock. Doug Marion ran a great show. Also, having so many diluted it also. I just visited an old friend today who always went to Indy with us and we were talking about the good old days. Sorry for the hijack.

Re: 69 COPO or?
You want to know why shows are not like that anyomore...it's because people are so damned worried about what these cars "bring" instead of going out and enjoying them. All these date codes, numbers matching, correct parts b.s. has gotten way out of hand.
I enjoy this site and it has alot of useful informnation on it, but from some of the responses and replies I see on here, it looks like money is the key for enjoyment. Did you not have more fun with your cars when you dorve them around and did not care if everything was correct, or did not have to nitpick everything about someone elses car? Like I said, alot of you guys definately know what it is you are talking about, but I am one that does not care about all this correctness b.s. I just like to get out and have fun and not worry if my car gets dirty or has a wrong date code on a radiator hose. I fully expect to hear some negative comments about some of what I said, so feel free to unleash. |

You might be surprised that a bunch of overly anal folks actually drive, enjoy and race their numbers matching, date code correct, high value SuperCars! I think the reason why you don't see the numbers at a SC event is bec/ the organizers don't really care about the cars - they care about their promotors, sponsors, vendors, etc... = $$$$$. They have crapped on many a facet of the car hobby, yet increase their prices every year - no thanks! I'll save my $$ and use it towards gas costs to get to the SCR https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...mlins/grin.gif |
