Colorado elk hunt

1 Attachment(s)
Just back home from an elk hunt in north-central Colorado. Except for the lousy weather and the slow maid service at the hunting lodge...it was a pretty good hunt. My bull scored 453 SCI inches and my buddy's scored 417 SCI inches.

Wow! Nice Bull Steve. Give us some details of the hunt. How does the SCI scoring work? That ranks right up there with one of the best ever for that state. Do you know how it would have scored B & C?

Looks like I am going to miss this years deer hunting opener and this will be the 1st time in many years. Seems I am going to be in Vegas having a good time. Now start telling us about your hunt! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Sierra Club and Boone and Crockett. I cannot speak for SCI but B&C is an organization that among other things scores animals based on a set of guidelines and for rifle hunting versus the Pope and Young for bow hunters.

lol...it's actually "Safari" Club. "Sierra" Club would take issue with hunting of any kind for any reason.

"lol...it's actually "Safari" Club. "Sierra" Club would take issue with hunting of any kind for any reason." Duh! Whoops, you are sooooo right. Sorry bout that.

In comparison, the World Record Elk taken in Upper Arrow Lake, BC scored 465 2/8 for a non-typical Elk so Steves is not too far off though I believe SCI scores higher than a comparable B&C. Bottom line for any Elk hunter.............nice fricken Elk! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Careful about painting conservation groups with a broad brush stroke, Steve. That's just not true https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

http://www.sierraclub.org/sierrasportsmen/

20% of their members identify themselves as hunters and anglers. As stated in their policies:

"Sport Hunting and Fishing -- Within both modified and natural ecosystems, the Sierra Club believes that acceptable management approaches include regulated periodic hunting and fishing when based on sufficient scientifically valid biological information and when consistent with all other management purposes and when necessary total protection of particular species or populations. Because national parks are set aside for the preservation of natural landscapes and wildlife, the Sierra Club is opposed to sport hunting in national parks and national monuments."

And yes, that is a beautiful rack.

conservation and habitat are one of my causes too. too bad all the conservation groups and efforts can't work together instead of fight each other for the last word

his ivorys were absolutely worn down to the gum line so we guessed him to be 9-10 years old. my taxidermist got the antlers late last night...hope to know the B&C green score this weekend.

here's a conservation shot, Ranier. I watched this 400" class bull for 15 minutes as he bugled and approached the 10-11 cows that were with that bull I bagged.

Not me, I have been pretty lucky with only one shot per deer. However, I am less lucky with my body as I have cracked the bridge of my nose and received stitches both times from taking left handed shots and not getting my head out of the way of the recoil. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...s/rolleyes.gif Notice (my) right eye "caused" by the last deer. The first deer kill was MUCH uglier (me) and lots more blood (mine)! https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ins/stupid.gif

Re: Colorado elk hunt

Should you decide to reside in Ill, you'll need to trade the hipo rife in for a shotgun. Gotta get a lot more close, and personal, and get a good rifled barrel. Some shotguns shoot slugs everywhere, but straight.

SS427 09-17-2007 07:49 AM

Re: Colorado elk hunt

I already have the rifled shotgun (and it shoots very straight) though most of my hunts take place in Missouri and Wyoming anyway so I still use the rifle. I may take up bow hunting in Illinois as I have always wanted to try that.

Schonyenko2 09-17-2007 08:16 AM

Re: Colorado elk hunt

I went to a Hastings slug barrel on my 870 about 10 years ago. Best thing I ever did. I was amazed that with a good sabot round that I had good confidence at 100+ yards.
Lot of my friends bow hunt. I just never felt confident enough to try it. I hate to wound something, and loose it.
You see that around here with some not so good hunters. Acouple of years ago we shot a nice buck that had an arrow stuck exiting below his right eye, having entered by his left ear. I think we did him a favor.
