Original 69 Camaro SS 21k L78

1 Attachment(s)
I had the chance on saturday to see my fathers friends original L78 camaro. He bought the car in may of 69. The car is in great condtion for its age. All original and it even has the dent from the factory that he never had fixed. This I thought was real cool. He said the dealership that he bought the car from had there body shop in another building across town. They would send the cars down to have them fixed if something was wrong. The guys that transported the cars bewtween the 2 building were cought several times for street racing customers cars. He new about this and just decided to leave it alone and didn't want his car to be mistreated.

He has all the original parts that are not one the car like the air pump the original carb. Even the rusted out chambered exshaust that feel off some time over the past twenty years of storage. It was stored in a barn never covered and it looks great. It was last on the road in 1983. He told me in 1976 a guy tried to buy it from him for 40k and he turned it down. The car only had like 15k he said. I thought you guys would enjoy some thing like this. He told me what he has it issured for what do you guys think a car like this is worth?

One thing I did notice was the Body Paint and Trim stamps were all green. All the cars that I seen had different colors. It was stamped in 2 spots.

Wow!
I am sure that it would be more than what "restored" L78's are going for, which I have seen 65-95k recently.

This car should give you Camaro boys a "woody"...

L78, 20k miles, all original, documented, one owner...the only way it could be better...if the owner was a redheaded nymphomaniac that owned a liquor store https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/naughty.gif

I couldn't pull myself away from this guy he was just full of knowledge from back in the day. He said the mice did get into the hood insulation for the first time this winter so that may be why. He did tell me he had everything wrapped up to keep the gas cold????? This guy had a 66 chevelle 325hp that he bought new and traded it in for a 68 chevelle L78 4sp car. He said the only reason he ordered the camaro with an automatic was his new wife couldn't drive the manual. It made my weekend. This car was at muscle car palooza this past sunday! If you seen the car chime in.

Jason,
Not doubting you, but are you certain that he said 1976?

It was just a cool used car back then. Yes, some of us were chasing them even back then, and it was difficult to find an unmolested Hi-Horse Car after just Seven Model Years.

But wasn't the average American home only worth approx $50k back then?

Very cool Car. Yes, would like to see many more detailed pics. thanks for posting.

Jason,

I'd be interested in seeing many more images of this car.
This thing is a time capsule. Gotta love it https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...ns/worship.gif

BTW, $40K in '76 is probably $35K over the value back then.
Remember, that was after the first gas crisis and big block
cars were on their death beds. People couldn't give those
things away back then.

Nuch

I know that was alot of money but he wouldn't sell it. The guy started at 15k and ended up at 40k. He told me he was a neighbor from the city with alot of money. He just wanted to buy it and put it away. Just going on what the guy told me.

Saw the car at Lebanon Valley yesterday. Looked like a very original survivor. Should be cleaned and detailed then driven and enjoyed. Keep from being an overdone trailer queen. They are only original once!!!

I just noticed that this car has a 4-core bent neck radiator. https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/imag...iggthumpup.gif

Anyone know how many L/78's came so equipped?

I wouldn't even clean and detail the engine. Then it looks like EVERY single other one out there. When you see an engine out like the one in that car, you just KNOW that you're looking at the real thing with nobody asking 'is it real or a clone?' No questions here.

A friend of mine had a 69 L78 Vert w/the bent tube radiator, it was a survivor too, I think the air condition radiators were used as needed to keep production going ??

Re: Original 69 Camaro SS 21k L78

Hi Jason,

I am involved with Vintage Camaro, a program that provides recognition and certifies survivor camaros at the GM nationals @ Carlisle. Below is a summary of our program. Please pass it along to the owner of the car. We would love to look the car over at next years GM nationals.

Thanks,

Steve

VINTAGE CAMARO PROVIDES THE FOLLOWING:

• Encourages the preservation, status, recognition and appreciation of unrestored Camaros

• Offer the hobbyist the opportunity to have their Camaro certified objectively and fairly

• Promotes and adheres to the philosophy that the original car showing wear is preferable to one that is improperly restored

• Vintage Camaro represents a repository of factory correct standards by which the hobby and serious restorers can all benefit

• Vintage Certification identifies a Camaro as having completed a thorough exhausting inspection process, which references factory standards, and at a level as certified by Vintage Camaro

Vintage Certifications levels are divided into four divisions:

• Vintage Legend - Camaros that are 80%-90% unrestored in all reference areas.
• Vintage Legacy - Camaros that are minimally 50% unrestored, in three out of five reference areas.
• Vintage Reference - Camaros that are unrestored in at least one Vintage Reference Area.
• Camaro Icon - Camaros that have original-unrestored components disbursed throughout.

Reference Areas: Certification consists of two areas of consideration, Originality (90%) and Preservation (10%). Reference areas are as follows:

• Engine Compartment Area
• Exterior Body
• Interior Body
• Underbody
• Trunk

What are the benefits of Vintage Certification???
• Vintage Camaro is unique, because it provides recognition, value and status to unrestored (survivor) Camaros.

• Provides documentation, and verifies the Camaros pedigree.

• Provides the owner with a detailed listing of correct and incorrect items

• Our goal is to uncover new information and share it with you.

How do I proceed getting my Camaro Certified???

Simply email us at [email protected] and request our rules and guidelines packet. If after reviewing our packet you feel your Camaro meets our criteria, fill out the last page Request for Application and mail it to the address provided at the bottom of the application.

If you have questions, our phone #’s are as follows, Steve Shauger at 631-514-9765 or Brett Merryman can be reached at 740-676-4920.

Hi Jason, thanks for forwarding the Vintage Camaro Certification info to Jim. I just spoke with him for an hour and he has a wealth of info. He mentioned the tin foil was used on the heater hoses to shield the fuel line in that area from heat since they are next to each other in that area. When he raced the car in 69 and early 70 the car ran 13.70's all day long with the orig F 70 14. All I can say is wow, a great car and owner.

Maybe I am wrong, but that air cleaner cover looks to be chrome. Weren't cowl induction cars supposed to be black lids? Just curious. Nice to see another curved neck 4 core radiator car. Nice car...

Steve Shauger 12-20-2007 06:04 PM

Re: Original 69 Camaro SS 21k L78

Yes chrome were used on open element/flat hoods. Cowl induction received black lids.

Re: Original 69 Camaro SS 21k L78

-----Back when these cars were new I dont think there was a kid out there that didnt switch black a-c lids out for chrome ones.It just made the engine look so much better. I remember thinking "Chevrolet must have made a mistake". I really have to resist the temptation even today to do the same thing. Correctness isnt always the way things look the best, IMHO........Bill S
